FINAL CUTS: NEW TALES OF HOLLYWOOD HORROR AND OTHER SPECTACLES, EDITED BY ELLEN DATLOW
This is a horror anthology. Therefore not all the stories recorded would fall under the term fantasy, but dread may also be dark fantasy. Mainly, the tales “Exhalation #10” by AC Wise, “In the Balcony of this Idawolf Arms” by Jeffrey Ford, and”Lords of the Matinee” by Stephen Graham Jones are both fantastic and dreadful. From the usage of hearing to fix murders to seeing a shapeshifting monster exude its master to getting a disembodied voice to show a hideous secret, these tales are a few of the most fantastic fantasies (and horrors) I have read this season.
THE BIG BOOK OF MODERN FANTASY, EDITED BY ANN VANDERMEER AND JEFF VANDERMEER
Even though a brand new release for 2020, this compendium permits us to explore renowned fantasy stories after World War II into 2010. It is an excellent source to research functions by titans of the genre, from Ursula K. Le Guin’s”The Ones Who Walk away from your Omelas” and Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s”A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings” to the latest tales like Aimee Bender’s “End of the Line” and Victor LaValle’s”I Left My Heart at Skaftafell.” For enthusiastic readers and authors of fantasy, this can be a must-have.
THE LIGHT OF THE MIDNIGHT STARS BY RENA ROSSNER
Deep from the Exotic forests, the holy magic of King Solomon lives on in his or her descendants. Gathering under the midnight stars, they play little miracles, and none are far more talented than the good Rabbi Isaac and his three brothers.

NEW FANTASY BOOKS: 2020 NOVELLAS
Underneath the umbrella of new fantasy novels, there are new fantasy brief novels. This list will concentrate on novellas published as novels. It is essential to be aware that, while all the below are out of Tor.com publishing (since they print novellas as individual publications), it’s undoubtedly the only place to find fantasy novellas. I suggest Asimov’s Science Fiction, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, and Clarkesworld publish fantasy novellas within their issues or online. For reference, this class includes works that are at or below 40,000 words.
THE LOST CITY BY AMANDA HOCKING
According to the New York Times, Amanda Hocking’s Trylle Trilogy’that features trolls, hobgoblins, and fairy-tale components and keeps the pages turning, has created an enthusiasm not felt at the sector as Stephenie Meyer or maybe even J. K. Rowling.’ In the aftermath of this bestselling fantasy series, The Lost City is the first publication in Amanda Hocking’s Omte Origins trilogy, a new experience set in her charming Trylle world and among the most incredible fantasy books to be published in 2020.
THE ORDER OF THE PURE MOON REFLECTED IN WATER BY ZEN CHO
A bandit walks right into a coffeehouse. A struggle ensues. Difficult to overcome an opening like this. This novella is such a joy to see, filled with humor and action. I’m a massive sucker for pleasure ensemble casts in both movies and books, and also, this book’s diverse group of thieves hits all of the notes.
COME TUMBLING DOWN (WAYWARD CHILDREN #5) BY SEANAN MCGUIRE
The Wayward Children series is one of my favorite series of all time, plus five novels; McGuire nevertheless doesn’t disappoint. In Come, Tumbling Down returns to fan-favorite characters, Jack and Jill, in the Moors. We see primary characters from previous novels group together, the battle for one another, and most of all, grieve for each other and what they have lost. I’m already counting the days down until book six releases in 2022.
DROWNED COUNTRY (THE GREENHOLLOW DUOLOGY #2) BY EMILY TESH
The first publication in Tesh’s duology, Silver at the Wood, is the absolute masterpiece of a novella. Drowned Nation continues the mythos and gorgeous queer love of Silver at the Wood and expands on it in this leading sequel. I cannot shout about Tesh’s function. Notably, in this age, if you are aching for that sense of being entirely embraced by magic and nature, Drowned Country provides.

THE EMPRESS OF SALT AND FORTUNE BY NGHI VO
It is difficult to compress epic fantasy into a novella, but Nghi Vo does this with fantastic skill. This is a great feminist fantasy about a handmaiden who befriends the emperor’s lonely spouse and becomes a story of rebellion, love, hope, and anger.
THE HELM OF MIDNIGHT BY MARINA LOSTETTER
In a bold and mortal heist, thieves have left away using an artifact of mysterious power that is the death mask of Louis Charbon. Produced by a master craftsman, it’s imbued with the soul of a monster out of the background, a serial murderer who terrorized the city.
Today Charbon is loose once again, killing from beyond the tomb. However, these murders are different from earlier, not just arbitrary but the function of a willful mind searching for answers to some sinister question.
It’s all up to Krona Horvath, along with her fellow Regulators, to join the mind of insanity to prevent this insatiable killer while confronting the dreadful truths left in his wake.
THE ANGEL OF THE CROWS BY KATHERINE ADDISON
For those looking for a supernatural Sherlock Holmes mashup, I give you The Angel of the Crows. Follow Dr. J.H. Doyle because he teams up with the enigmatic Crow, plus they scour London to locate Jack the Ripper. This publication was called the Sherlock Holmes fanfic, and it is a reasonable explanation: Easter eggs and nods to figures and arcs are sprinkled throughout. It is a beautiful, fun-filled supernatural puzzle.
DANCE ON SATURDAY: STORIES BY ELWIN COTMAN
Small Beer Press has released a few of my favorite collections, and Cotman’s magnificent book indeed makes the listing. Cotman uses the whole range of fantasy and speculative fiction to compose strong stories on race, energy, and human character. The title novella is very stellar, about a group of immortals from Pittsburgh who will prolong their own life (and limbs) by developing and consuming particular fruit. It is a timely set full of wit and gorgeous language.
THE BONE SHARD DAUGHTER BY ANDREA STEWART (SEPTEMBER 8, 2020)
Stewart creates a powerful epic fantasy debut with The Bone Shard Daughter. Lin, the daughter of the emperor, spends her days behind locked doors. Her father, the emperor, refuses to admit her as his heir. Therefore Lin promises to learn the craft of bone shard magic. This is just another glorious take about electricity and forbidden magic.

WOVEN IN MOONLIGHT BY ISABEL IBAÑEZ
Ibañez crafts a gorgeous fantasy inside this novel about Ximena that will twist thread out of moonlight. Ximena is your decoy for the past remaining Illustrian royal, and as soon as the usurper Atoc asks the royal’s hand in marriage, Ximena belongs in her place. This is a gorgeous and captivating tale of sin, love, and revolution.
WHERE DREAMS DESCEND BY JANELLA ANGELES
Where fantasy Descend was clarified as Moulin Rouge matches Phantom of the Opera, however, there’s the heavy vibe of Caraval matches The Night Circus. For those looking for a publication that captures the mystery, magic, and love of this point, this is the book for you.
A DEADLY EDUCATION BY NAOMI NOVIK (SEPTEMBER 29, 2020)
Dark school of the magical story! And this faculty of supernatural, Scholomance, strives to kill its pupils. This book is all about a reluctant dark sorceress navigating (and living ) Scholomance, a place full of monsters, where breakfast may kill you. Hell yes. As a massive lover of Novik’s previous books Uprooted and Mixing Silver, A Deadly Instruction is on the very top of my listing for 2020.
A DECLARATION OF THE RIGHTS OF MAGICIANS BY H.G. PARRY
If you’re trying to find a genre-defying historical fantasy, then that checks all of the boxes. Envision the French revolution but with Robespierre as a necromancer. It has got political mystery and intrigue, also is a strong story about the battle for liberty in the early modern world.

THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF ADDIE LARUE BY V.E. SCHWAB (OCTOBER 6, 2020)
Fans of Schwab’s job will undoubtedly adore this expansive and completely heart-wrenching novel. Addie is confronted with an isolating and lonely curse: nobody is permitted to recall her. However, after 300 decades of persisting through this kind of existence, Addie finally stumbles across a young guy who remembers her name. This is a publication that’s both heartbreaking and hopeful. I read that the last hundred pages into the night, gasping and sobbing. It is a gorgeous read.
THE OBSIDIAN TOWER BY MELISSA CARUSO
Melissa Caruso yields a new string with magnificent world-building and mortal magic. Rex can drain the life from what she touches, and after accidentally killing somebody in self-love, she moves on the run. She discovers a group of magic experts (I like ensemble casts!) And as bands are not performing in epic fantasy, they must save the entire world. Fans of Caruso’s past Swords and Fire collection will be thrilled with this new fantasy launch.
THE ONCE AND FUTURE WITCHES BY ALIX E. HARROW (OCTOBER 13, 2020)
Follow three sisters who combine the suffragists at New Salem in the late 1800s, then add some witchcraft into the mixture. Um, yes. If you enjoyed The Six Thousand Doors of January, then prepare for more awe-inspiring composing. However, remember: as Alix mentioned on Twitter, while January was largely G-rated, The Once and Future Witches is undoubtedly not.

PIRANESI BY SUSANNA CLARKE (SEPTEMBER 15, 2020)
As a Massive fan of Clarke’s The Ladies of Grace Adieu and Other Stories and Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, Susanna Clarke’s new book is Guaranteed to be another success. A labyrinth theory about a home with infinite rooms along with the guy who explores is precisely the sort of stories that prefer to sink to hours and hours.
THE YEAR OF THE WITCHING BY ALEXIS HENDERSON
As soon as I hit chapter after studying the deliciously dark prologue (I adore prologues) along with a priest fainted a lineup of blood to the protagonist’s face, I was hooked. Dark feminist fantasy? A banned Darkwood? This has everything. For people searching for a mixture of goGothichorror, and dark fantasy, this is the publication that will have you lick your lips for more.
A SONG OF WRAITHS AND RUIN BY ROSEANNE A. BROWN
A crown princess and a refugee are attracted, both with the intent of killing another. Insert their growing fascination, and things get fun. This type of powerful fantasy introduction by Roseanne A. Brown, such as enemies-to-lovers romance, historical evils, a contest, and all of the backstabbing. This is part of a duology, also, so when you’re done, be ready to create grabby hands for your follow-up.
EMPIRE OF DREAMS BY RAE CARSON
I browse the Girl of Fire and Thorns trilogy early to the pandemic, along with its magical method and thoughtful critiques of power and faith were fantastic escapes through nowadays. Empire of fantasy is put on precisely the same planet as the Girl of Fire and Thorns trilogy but is a standalone book. Carson focuses on this book about an orphan who combines the Royal Guard, intent on shielding people’s relatives. But, no girl has lived through the recruitment year.
GIRL, SERPENT, THORN BY MELISSA BASHARDOUST
Allow me to present you to perform the feminist, queer fairytale you did not know you wanted. And you also want that very much. Soraya is a princess who’s cursed to poison anyone she touches. Her twin brother’s wedding strategies, and she has to determine that she is and will become. Is she a princess, or is she a creature? I like books that handle this question.
THE HOUSE IN THE CERULEAN SEA BY TJ KLUNE
For people searching for a lush, soft fantasy about locating, belonging, and getting, this beautiful book will warm your spirit. The book is all about Linus Baker, a caseworker for the Department in Charge of Youth who’s sent to an orphanage to ascertain whether six magic children might cause the apocalypse. There he meets with the orphanage’s master, who’s determined to help keep the kids safe. It is romantic and beautiful and such a beautiful escape for anyone seeking respite from room scrolling.
CEMETERY BOYS BY AIDEN THOMAS (SEPTEMBER 1, 2020)
A female boy is desperate to show himself a brute to his conventional Latinx loved ones so that he summons a ghost. The issue is: the spirit will not leave him alone. I love, adore, adore annoying, alluring ghosts, and the chemistry between Gabriel and Julian is chefs. * It is such an influential publication in which LGBTQIA and Latinx children will see themselves being strong heroes.
THE COUNCILLOR BY E.J. BEATON
This Machiavellian fantasy follows a scholar’s quest to choose the country’s next ruler amidst lies, conspiracy, and assassination.
After the passing of Iron Queen, Shoreline Bray fractures the kingdom of Elira, Lysander Ahead, the palace scholar, along with the queen’s closest friend, is named Councillor. Publically, Lysande has to pick the next monarch from one of the city rulers vying for the throne. Privately, she attempts to detect which ruler killed the queen, imagining the usage of magic.
Resourceful, analytical, and silent, Lysande seems to embody the motto she had been raised: what in its place. However, while she hides her drug dependence from her brand new partners, she can’t conceal her growing fascination with power. She’s locked at a strategy game together with the city-rulers, notably the erudite prince Luca Fontaine, that appears to change between ally and rival.
Further from home, an old enemy is stirring: the magic-wielding White Queen is on the move. Her cooperation with a traitor among the royal milieu poses a threat not only to the calmness of the kingdom but also to the kingdom and the success of all that Lysande cares about.
In a universe where the low-born maintain their heads down, Lysande has to learn how to fight an enemy that wears many guises… even as she wages her battle between restraint and ambition.
RUTHLESS GODS (SOMETHING DARK AND HOLY #2) BY EMILY A. DUNCAN
For people trying to find a dark fantasy that revels in its villains and enemies-to-lovers love, this is the show for you. Ruthless Gods proceeds the blood war and magic which Wicked Saints left with, but this time includes WAY more body terror, harmful questing, also this-is-a-bad-time-to-make-out-but-let’s-anyhow delicious moments.
THE LORD OF THE RINGS BY J.R.R. TOLKIEN
Tolkien’s seminal three-volume epic chronicles the Battle of the Ring, where Frodo the hobbit and his companions set out to destroy the wicked Ring of Power and restore peace to Middle-earth. The dear trilogy still casts a very long shadow, with established a few of the most recognizable and enduring tropes in fantasy literature.
A GAME OF THRONES BY GEORGE R.R. MARTIN (1996)
While we wait patiently for G.R.R. Martin to complete his long-running series’ first installment, it is worth noting the book that made his name also gave its title to the series that attracted the TV dream the mainstream. If His Dark Materials is your anti-Narnia, then A Game of Thrones and its sequels will be the anti-LOTR. Martin provides a quasi-medieval feeling as abundant in magical as Middle-earth at a sharp-toothed response to Tolkien’s idealism. However, it runs on cynical realpolitik rather than quiet courage. Inside this grimdark Earth, winter is coming, debts have to be paid, and noble personalities can perish tragic, senseless deaths at any given moment.
AMERICAN GODS BY NEIL GAIMAN (2001)
A decade later, Good Omens, Neil Gaiman returned into the sphere of spiritual fantasy with this glorious solo enterprise. American Gods combine old legends using a contemporary noir sensibility. It is peopled with deities and convicts, and the distinctions between them are not always obvious. In its center is the improbably named Shadow Moon, a brand new widower who drifts to the use of a con-man called Mr. Wednesday. They move on a great, conservative American, road trip but Shadow soon finds their cross-country trek is not all that it seems to be
A WIZARD OF EARTHSEA BY URSULA K. LE GUIN
That is a coming of age story; leaps and bounds over the typical run of the mill boy-becomes-wizard-and-saves-world. With prose so great you will want to lick at the webpage and a narrative as enthralling, you may do no wrong purchasing this sequence. Lovers of Tolkien’s Middle Earth will find themselves right at home in Guin’s Earthsea. This is epic fantasy, but it is among the best show out there. These novels won a Nebula and Hugo award-winning. Here is the type of book you can read over and above, then more. Touching, unique, sometimes sad, the Earthsea saga is among the fantastic masterpieces of fantasy literature. Before there was Harry Potter, there was Ged.
