FOR ADULTS
“CRAZY GLUE” BY ETGAR KERET, PUBLISHED IN LA WEEKLY
It is a brief story about a connection teetering on a knife-edge while also using somebody to glue their toes into the ceiling. It is the story of eloquent back-and-forth dialogue along with the strange circumstances we put ourselves into, and regardless of, appreciate.
THE ICE CREAM MAN AND OTHER STORIES BY SAM PINK
This group tells the lifestyles of the working class and minimum wage employees. It’s brutal in its honesty, nevertheless also amusing. Pink’s stories consist of awkward moments of driven link and rants of anger which are funny but additionally unapologetically correct.
“THE SWAN AS A METAPHOR FOR LOVE” BY AMELIA GRAY, PUBLISHED IN ELECTRIC LITERATURE, ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN JOYLAND LOS ANGELES IN 2012
Let us discuss swans and all of the shit that they do. Amelia Gray really nails the hilarity of mad ranting in this narrative, with lines such as “A person discovered a swan after that has been twenty-four years old, and probably it had been breeding for life, which everybody made a huge deal out of through the swan wasn’t even old enough to lease a vehicle ” The end is like somebody shutting a door in your face, but you are so happy they got that treasure out of words until they did.
“GATOR BUTCHERING FOR BEGINNERS” BY KRISTEN ARNETT, PUBLISHED IN ELECTRIC LITERATURE
This story is disturbing in its comedy. Even its name is biting in its wryness. Reading this, you won’t laugh in glee as far as in distress. It is strange, and it’s bizarre, and it is jarring. However, Kristen Arnett is a master of them, having composed the extraordinary and humorous novel Mostly Dead Matters.
“Gator Butchering for Beginners” is visceral, picture in its specifics of having an alligator while cutting with information on relationships. I believe my favorite description of this comes in Electric Literature; I laughed following the two before and after reading the narrative: “Spoiler: it is all about alligators, but it is not about alligators.”

Known humor author Steve Almond picked this narrative because of the winner of this 2015 Barthelme Prize. In his rationale, Almond calls the story “funny as hell” and writes that by studying the narrative, “we have to acknowledge the heart and its deranged pursuit of love can’t be disabled or diminished by our neurotic defenses” It’s a bizarre story through and through, however, finishes on a hot note.
“CHARLES” BY SHIRLEY JACKSON, PUBLISHED IN LIBRARY OF AMERICA’S STORY OF THE WEEK
I discovered this narrative both amusing and unsettling, which to me explains the essence of parenthood. Aside from Shirley Jackson’s well-known creepy fiction (e.g., “The Lottery” and The Haunting of Hill House), Jackson also wrote humorous essays and short fiction on parenthood. This story centers around a young boy who tells his parents about a classmate called Charles who’s”terribly new” in course, constantly getting into mischief and being penalized. The tales about Charlies develop more shockingly daily.
FUNNY BOOKS OF SHORT STORIES, ESSAYS, & TALES
Within this part, I have included collections of short stories famous for their comedy and also three memoirs composed of humorous stories and anecdotes.
HEADS OF THE COLORED PEOPLE: STORIES BY NAFISSA THOMPSON-SPIRES
Thompson-Spires writes a gorgeous collection of stories exploring gruesome humor and catastrophic emotions, focusing on black identity as well as the middle course. One funny story includes two moms exchanging sneering opinions through notes tucked into their children’s backpacks. Thompson-Spires uses satire and other apparatus to remark on race and identity politics, gun violence, and black civilization. This is a sign of the case of using comedy to inform necessary, intense stories.
THE EVIL B.B. CHOW AND OTHER STORIES BY STEVE ALMOND
One of my favorite short story authors, Almond, takes mundane conditions and turns up the comedy and emotion volume. From a household whose sure aliens have abducted them to a dentist who desires nothing to do with his very best friend’s book, these tales of love and heartbreak will cause you to laugh out loud when admiring prose that’s natural and down to earth.
DEAR GIRLS: INTIMATE TALES, UNTOLD SECRETS, & ADVICE FOR LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE BY AI WONG
Ali Wong is one of my favorite comedians. Seeing Hard Knock Wife on Netflix only weeks after giving birth to my daughter was a breath of fresh air. I had been crying both from fatigue and out of feeling entirely seen with Wong’s humor. Her publication Dear Girls proceeds with that refreshing comedy. Structured as letters for her two brothers, Wong tells tales about relationships, developing San Francisco, parenting, and being a working mother in a male-dominated profession. These tales are funny, gross, so fair.
SELF-INFLICTED WOUNDS: HEARTWARMING TALES OF EPIC HUMILIATION BY AISHA TYLER
Sometimes the best answer to these worst cringe-worthy moments would be to laugh. Aisha Tyler informs a string of tales of monumental errors and embarrassment in a means which is entirely laugh-out-loud amusing. It is a humorous manifesto of sorrow and self-consciousness, but it is also about working through the epic fuck-ups and moving forward and upwards.

Ellis pulls no punches in this humorous collection of tales on womanhood. In a bit over 200 pages, this book consists of searingly sharp tales exploring the shadowy corners of the lifestyles of American homemakers. Every one of those twelve’s stories answers the question, “What do housewives do daily?” With a grin, a snarl, and a bite.
MAN SEEKING WOMAN (ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED AS THE LAST GIRLFRIEND ON EARTH) BY SIMON RICH
Romance is frequently humorous. It is embarrassing, messy, and without common sense. Rich understands this and uses this understanding to compose stories about romances that are as memorable as they are absurd. By God managing his needy girlfriend, Sherlock Holmes cannot deduce his girlfriend cheating on him; these stories are also lovely and endearing.
IS EVERYONE HANGING OUT WITHOUT ME? (AND OTHER CONCERNS) BY MINDY KALING
While not a group of fiction, Emmy-nominated author Mindy Kaling writes a hella funny publication of observations about love (this publication is ranked #16 in Romance Fiction Writing Reference about Amazon?), friendship, and Hollywood. It is funny, it is honest, and it is a fantastic book to dive into if you’re trying to read about celebrities and most incredible friends in a manner that feels just like you are using a deep conversation over a glass of wine.
FOR KIDS
PAUL JENNINGS’ FUNNIEST STORIES BY PAUL JENNINGS
Paul Jennings is a favorite children’s author, which compendium collects about 25 tales of his funniest stories in the late’80s and early’90s. This book of tales caters to children around 8 and 9 years old, although the tales are proven to make adults laugh.
DRAGONS LOVE TACOS BY ADAM RUBIN (AUTHOR) AND DANIEL SALMIERI (ILLUSTRATOR)
I have included this publication because while reading this to my daughter, my husband and I laughed the hardest. It is cute, it is amusing, and it reminds me of this fundamental principle: Don’t feed dragons hot salsa.
THE BIG BED BY BUNMI LADITAN (AUTHOR) AND TOM KNIGHT (ILLUSTRATOR)
Ah, the narrative is as old as time: having the child sleep in their very own bed. This humorous tale is about a small girl who does not need to sleep in her little bed, so she devises a different way to sleep in her parents’ bed.
