Premium deposited
The premium deposited so far within the scheme is about 13,000 crores INR. The farmers also received a compensation of 64,000 crores INR when the COVID pandemic struck. The share of premium stands at 2 percent for kharif crops, 1.5 percent for Rabi crops and 5 percent for horticultural and commercial crops. A total of 8,090 crores have been paid to the farmers.
Benefits reaped
For the year 2018-19, about 52,41,268 farmers got the claim amount. About 5.5 crore farmers apply for the scheme every year and 90,000 crores INR have been paid by the government to the farmers. The money is paid to the government through direct transfer to the bank accounts of the respective farmers.
To get the benefits of the scheme, being registered under the scheme is mandatory and a farmer can do so offline and online. If a farmer holds a Kisan Credit Card, they do not need to register for the scheme separately as the premium amount will be deducted from there directly unless the farmer does not want to be a part of the scheme.
The claims are usually settled through aadhar seeding. During the COVID-19 lockdown, a total of 8731.70 crores INR was paid to 7,00,000 farmers under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana.
- Under this scheme, the extra premium is provided by the state as well as the central governments. In the North-eastern states, about 90% of the premium is provided by the government and the rest by the farmer.
- The average sum under the scheme has been increased to Rs 40,700. Earlier it was Rs 15,100 per hectare.
- Everything from pre-spring to post-harvest has been covered. Any natural calamity that stopped sowing or harvesting will be included under the scheme. Timely improvements have been made in the scheme to ensure that it progresses as times do.
The registration process for crop insurance has begun
Registrations for the Rabi season of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana have started. With this, the farmers who hold a Kisan credit card are already enrolled on the scheme. However, they do need to declare the condition of their crops to ensure that they can reap the benefits of the scheme. Farmers who hold a Kisan credit card but do not want to be a part of the scheme will have to make sure that they inform their banks before the deduction of the premium.
Farmers will be paying 1.5% of the premium while the government pays the rest.
- The premium of loanee farmers will be deducted automatically by the bank. The loanee farmers will not have to give a consent letter and all those loanee farmers who do not want to get the benefit under this scheme will have to submit a dissent letter to the bank.
- It will be required for all non-loanee farmers to give a consent letter to take advantage of crop insurance schemes. All the farmers have to contact any state-level cooperative bank, regional rural bank, commercial bank, or financial institution.

Farmers without a Kisan Credit Card can get their crops insured from the representatives of the insurance companies.
Uttar Pradesh Fasal Bima Yojana Update
The Uttar Pradesh government made a few updates to the scheme recently. The farmers will get to reap more benefits during natural calamities and the premium amount will be 1.5-2 per cent more. If a farmer wishes to get benefit from the scheme, they will have to approach the bank with all necessary documents and will have to deposit the same there for scrutiny. If found in order, the money is credited to the bank account of the farmers to make up for the losses they have faced.
Under the scheme, about 35,000 farmers of Lucknow got their crops insured. If a farmer holds a Kisan credit card they do not need to get separate insurance but they will need to inform the government about the crop losses on the toll-free number – 18001030061. In Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, 35,259 farmers got insurance for a premium of Rs 3.27 crore. There are a total of 2.29 lakh farmers in Lucknow and 172714 Kisan Credit Card holders.
