Key vocabulary
AU: Alternate Universe. A narrative that diverges from canon (see below) in crucial respects. Case in point: a universe where Tom Riddle died at dawn and wasn’t a threat.
Canon: Concepts that are established portions of the novels or happen to be straight decreed by J.K Rowling as part of the Harry Potter world. Case in point: it’s a canon in which Hermione Granger slaps Draco Malfoy.
Fanon: Concepts that are very popular, and utilized in a lot of fan fiction, lots of fans confuse them with canon. Case in point: Draco Malfoy’s middle name being Abraxas rather than Lucius.
EWE: This stands for ‘Epilogue, What Epilogue?’ and describes some fan fiction where the nineteen Decades Later’ chapter was ignored. Case in point: A narrative where Ron marries Lavender rather than Hermione Granger. Occasionally that has occurred unintentionally since the fan fiction has been printed before Deathly Hallows.
PWP: Instead of meaning ‘Plot, What Plot?’, or even the slightly seedier ‘Porn Without Plot.’ Exactly, exactly what it says on the tin. If that is what you’re searching for, then you might want to jump immediately to this listing of Harry Potter erotica tips.
OOC: Out of personality, i.e., the figures don’t act as we must come to hope that they would. Case in point: Hermione Granger is behaving unusually dumb.
Best Harry Potter Fanfictions
#1. Harry Potter and the Last Horcrux
Genre: Action/Adventure, Drama, Romance, Tragedy
Harry and the previous Horcrux from Mike, aka Full Pensieve, are arguably among the most well-written and very realistic HP fanfic I’ve ever read. While I mention realistic, I mean it when it comes to a portrayal of this Second Wizarding War and how it impacts the Muggles. This detail went to expanding the Harry Potter universe and the activities and emotions of these figures. It’s still very much a dream story, and magic plays an essential part in it.
The narrative starts with much more adult and grown-up characters making a final stand against Voldemort. The air is gloomy and sad but believable, unlike many other HP fics that try to become “dim.” There’s a certain equilibrium, and hope is not lost.
Harry and the previous Horcrux began back in 2006 and has been just recently finished. In case you’ve read this story before, you may remember both endings, one of which was unfinished. Luckily, the writer completely rewrote and completed the story, and now you can read the entire thing.
#2. Bungle in the Jungle
Genre: Action/Adventure
Bungle in the Jungle and its sequel Turn Me Loose by JBern are my long-time favorites. It was hard picking between them and The Twist I have Lived by precisely the same writer, but the latter will probably be receiving a sequel while Bungle is finished. Regardless, I highly suggest reading all these writer’s stories if you like well-written action along with a confident, independent Harry.
Rest assured: he does not develop into a badass with superpowers overnight. There is almost always a very long road before the hero at the beginning of the fic, but he gets there through hard work, will, and utter conviction. And when he does conquer Voldemort, it is via an actual conflict instead of a fortunate fluke!
It is not the only action, possibly: JBern’s take on imagery plus an exceptional curse-breaking / warding system he created deserves compliments.
P. S. Should you like Jbern’s writing style, you may be considering his printed works.
#3. Harry Potter and the Techniques of Rationality
Genre: Adventure, Drama, Humor, Rational Fic
Harry Potter and the Techniques of Rationality by Less Incorrect is probably the most exceptional HP fan-fiction part in life. It tells the story of a significantly different Harry: brought by his scientist stepfather and a loving aunt Petunia, the boy owns a brilliant, curious mind and a wholesome bit of skepticism.
That is why studying Hogwarts and the presence of magic is such a shock. Harry but does not break down but instead approaches magic with logic and the scientific method. This is fundamentally a story of him trying to find out just how magic works and wizards do ridiculous things.
HPMOR is so popular it has its site, fan art, and a massive following (and for a great reason). In 122 chapters, along with a whopping 661k words, it is going to keep you busy for days.
#4. Stages of Hope
Genre: Action/Adventure, Drama, Tragedy
Stages of Hope’s narrative from the early silver storm are as follows: a year and a half after Bill’s and Fleur’s wedding, Harry and his friends are still searching for the Horcruxes. Voldemort has taken within the Ministry, and the majority of the Purchase is dead. A freak magic accident happens throughout the Horcrux hunt, which transfers the group to another dimension – like their own and subtly different.

I believed I wouldn’t say I liked tragic/moody till I read this one. I then understood that many writers could not write this genre quite well. Simply killing your characters off one by one doesn’t create terrible fanfic. Also, you will need to make an emotional relationship between the reader and the figures, and do not neglect to reveal that glimmer of hope in the darkest situations. Stages of Hope does so nicely. I felt sorry for the figures, but I laughed in the occasional black comedy. All-in-all, it is a really well-written and unexpectedly believable story.
#5. White Knight, Grey Queen
Genre: Action/Adventure, Romance
Jonas has composed a range of tales that follow the identical formula:
- Harry meets a woman.
- She helps him gain confidence.
- The group destroys their enemy’s lives happily ever after.
And it works: the tales are certainly fascinating to see, and if you are a sucker for happy endings like I’m, you’ll undoubtedly be satisfied. My personal favorite from Jeconais is your White Knight, Grey Queen that is among his best functions also features several intriguing characters along with an odd pairing (Harry/Pansy).

#6. A Black Comedy
Genre: Comedy, Action/Adventure
There is lots of humorous Harry Potter FF, but few tales are as well-written and imaginative as A Black Comedy by noon. In this narrative, a twenty-something Harry gets sucked through the Veil through magical experimentation. Surprisingly it turns out to become a gateway to another dimension, one that Sirius entered before him.
Reunited with his uncle, Harry makes it his mission to mess with the lives of his enemies and friends and have fun. There is lots of humor in this narrative, but it is not just mindless entertainment: A Dark Mirror also features an intriguing spin on the Harry vs. Voldemort battle.
#7. Harry Potter and the Wastelands of all Time
Genre: Action/Adventure, Time Travel
Harry’s determination to triumph against Voldemort directs him to create a pact with the devil (figuratively speaking). Consequently, their battle escalates before it threatens the very existence of the planet. Harry earnings new, fearsome forces and creates new, more hazardous enemies than he could have imagined. This narrative is unquestionably epic in scope; however, occasionally, it is a little all over the area that’s why I have not rated it higher. Wastelands of all Time is finished, and its sequel Heartlands of Time is in progress.
#8. Indifference and Neglect
Genre: Drama, Comedy
In the beginning, Indifference and Neglect may look like nothing more than Harry behaving chilly or lashing out at all. You’ll quickly realize this is not like most angst fics; however: it is more true of Harry just deciding to quit giving a damn. Everybody expects something of him wants to restrain his lifetime, and also the young magician has had sufficient. This choice has unexpected consequences from the second half of this narrative.
Though it’s grave, for the most part, Indifference and Neglect have some humorous moments too. The fic has lots of confrontations, but maybe not a great deal of action.
#9. Harry Potter And The Summer Of Change
Genre: Action/Adventure, Drama, Romance
Fans of this Harry/Tonks pairing will certainly like Harry Potter And The Summer Of Change by Lord Dwar. It’s a gritty and frequently grim tale of Harry growing more powerful and taking charge of his own life. I certainly loved Lord Dwar’s version of Harry, who’s no more satisfied with getting by on luck alone and attempts to improve himself and learn from his errors.
On the flip side, I believed that Harry’s personality changed too quickly when I read the narrative. He certainly does not grow to be a powerful, confident magician; however, three months old remains an extremely brief time to become a grown-up.
#10. Apprentice Potter
Genre: Action/Adventure, Drama, Romance
Among the greatest ones, I have ever read is Apprentice Potter from Draco664. Hunted from the Death Eater, at odds with the Ministry, rather than seeing eye-to-eye with all the so-called “Light Side,” Harry finds an unexpected ally that takes him as an Apprentice. The narrative is unusually well-written, believable, as well as amusing. Additionally, it features a somewhat uncommon Harry/Blaise pairing (Blaise is a woman in this narrative).
I’d have loved to position this fanfic greater in my record because I liked it a whole lot. Regrettably, while Apprentice Potter and its first sequel Journeyman Potter are complete, the next installment Master Potter is bare and appears to be left-handed. I think it’s well worth a read, and also, the initial two are to stand nicely by themselves.
#11. Roundabout Destiny By Maryroyale
Hermione’s fate is changed from the Powers that Be. She’s cast back into the Marauders Era, where she’s Hermione Potter, the pureblood fraternal twin sister of James Potter. She keeps Hermione Granger’s memories and decides to change her brother’s destiny for the better.

Lily has always considered herself regular. However, since she passes her 7th year, things begin to change, and Lily begins going a bit angry. Unexpectedly, she is Head Girl, her partners behave strangely, and there is a new James Potter she can not appear to eliminate.

Vernon transformed at the beginning into a much better man due to your desire. How will this impact Harry, along with the total Wizarding World?
#14. The Incredible Race By Cheryl Dyson
Pairing: Drarry (Draco Malfoy X Harry Potter)
Despite their dislike for one other, Aurors Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy are compelled to participate in a broadcast global race to give free favorable PR for the Ministry.
#15. The Electric Fizzing Prick Pistols, or Whatever by whitmans_kiss

#17. Exitus Acta Probat By Jellybellys
Pairing: Tomione (Tom Riddle X Hermione Granger)
Hermione chooses to travel back in time to stop Tom Riddle after a sequence of disastrous occurrences. [Author description: This story has time travel, non-evil Slytherins, romance, treachery, death, anguish, and a dash of humor.] The film is rated M. It’s still in the works. This tale is vastly undervalued, and I implore you to read it immediately!]
#18. Harry Potter and the Prince of Slytherin by The Sinister Man
The narrative follows a Harry Potter sorted into Slytherin and spanned over one million words and 132 chapters. He has a sibling, Jim, who is said to be the Boy Who Lived.
#19. Azoth by Zeitgeistic
This viral story is a must-read for all Drarry fans. After defeating Voldemort in the Second World War, Harry and Hermione return to Hogwarts to finish their seventh and final year. However, the Boy Who Lived can’t help but fall in love with Draco Malfoy, resulting in lots of passionate moments between the two.

#21. I Know Not, And I Cannot Know – Yet I Live And I Love By Billowsandsmoke
The unusual yet realistic friendship between Severus Snape and Luna Lovegood is explored by billows and smoke in this story. It recounts Luna’s seven years at Hogwarts and how her quiet demeanor affects Snape’s attitude toward her. As a potion student, he assists her, and she helps him with his thoughts about past regrets and the future.
Luna is probably the only character with whom fanfic like this could be written, and it’s well worth the read. Luna’s persona is spot-on here, and Snape is entertaining enough to read about.
#22. Reclamation By Copperbadge
Tom Riddle, who changed himself to Tom Gaunt after losing family members and became a professor at Hogwarts, is told in Reclamation by Copperbadge. Professor Albus Dumbledore’s tremendous influence on Tom won out in this version of the narrative, and Tom was able to realize his goal to teach, if not his wish to live forever.
In the process, he offers advice to Remus and Sirius and attempts to assist Severus Snape, albeit he fails miserably. This story takes a unique view of Tom Riddle and is well worth reading.
#23. Yes, But By Aestel
Yes, but by Aestel is a spoof of the Marriage Law fics subgenre of fanfiction. The idea is that magical Britain suffers from inbreeding and declining population rates. Therefore the Ministry has enacted legislation requiring purebloods to marry either half-bloods or Muggleborns to stabilize the population.
The courtship of Severus Snape and Nymphadora Tonks is the subject of this tale. They’re being used as test subjects for a scheme that the majority of magical Britain opposes. It’s funny as a parody. It’s also an excellent portrayal of Tonks.
#24. What To Do When The War Is Over By Glisseo
Glisseo’s story is precisely what it sounds like: Lily and James are compiling a list of things they want to do when the First Wizarding War is over. They begin it before Harry is born, as Lily recounts her childhood trip to Wales. James isn’t thrilled with the concept at first, but it gradually becomes a means for them to stay calm throughout the chaos of war.
They post the list on the refrigerator, and it continues to expand as they conceive of new things to do. This narrative emphasizes how young Lily and James are, and it concludes on a sad note.
#25. The Green Girl By Colubrina
Hermione has been sorted into Slytherin; how will things change now that the brain of Golden Trio has other friends?
#26. Nightingale By Everambling
Hermione Granger, a brilliant student, and potential MI5 recruit, is unintentionally sent back in time by a top-secret government experiment-right into the lap of aspiring bio-engineer Tom Riddle, whom she recognizes from her time as the man whose deadly ambition would signal a nation’s demise.

After fleeing Hogwarts, Sirius resolves to stay in England and makes Harry’s safety his first concern. [Based on the peerage system of the wizarding world, this is an incredibly long and famous story.
#28. A Dealer Not a Death Eater by Jaxon
Lilly Evans is in love with Severus Snape rather than James Potter in the years leading up to the first Wizarding War.
#29. Forbidden by Savageland
