Penalty on delay in Thane property tax 

Under the government of Maharashtra Gazette Extraordinary Part Four No. 14-27 April 2010 and the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, property owners in Thane are liable to pay 2% of such tax for each month or part thereof after the last date on which the tax was due, as penalty for delay. May 12, 2022: In a major relief to property owners in Thane, the Maharashtra government, in May 2022, has offered them a waiver of 31% the property tax for flats up to an area of 500 sq ft in the Thane Municipal Corporation limits.

This waiver pertains to the ‘general tax component’ in the overall property tax calculation. Under the TMC tax system, all residents have to pay 92% of the total tax amount calculated under 12 different tax categories. Out of this 92%, around 31% is general tax. The remaining component includes solid waste tax, tree tax, state government cess and water tax, etc.
