Gorakhpur link expressway: Everything you should know

[ecis2016.org] The 91.352 km Gorakhpur link expressway aims to provide faster connectivity between Gorakhpur and Azamgarh.

The under-construction 91.352-km long Gorakhpur link expressway when completed will be another milestone achieved in the infrastructure development front by the state of Uttar Pradesh. To convey and carry the cultural and commercial values from Gorakhpur to Azamgarh and vice-versa, the Uttar Pradesh government decided to construct the Gorakhpur link expressway. With this expressway, faster connectivity and better commuter experience is envisaged with the travel time becoming less than 5 hours. Announced in 2018 by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, land acquisition for the Gorakhpur Link Expressway started in 2019. The approved project including the land cost is Rs 5,876.67 crore.

This 4-lane wide expressway can be expanded to 6 lanes and will connect Gorakhpur district’s Jaitpur village to Azamgarh district’s Salarpur village located on the newly inaugurated Purvanchal Expressway.

The starting point of the Gorakhpur link expressway is Jaitpur village on the NH-27 and the ending point is Salarpu.r at Purvanchal expressway. There are four districts that fall on the Gorakhpur link expressway namely Gorakhpur, Azamgarh, Ambedkarnagar, Sant Kabir Nagar. It will also pass over the Ghaghara River. The Gorakhpur link expressway will going forward be linked with Varanasi through a separate link road.

The Gorakhpur link expressway project will be implemented on Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) mode. Divided into 2 packages for implementation, APCO Infrastructure will be responsible for developing package 1 – i.e. from Jaitpur to Fulwariya in Ambedkar Nagar that will be around 48.317-km long.

DilipBuildcon will be responsible for package 2 of the Gorakhpur link expressway that will be developed from Fulwariya in Ambedkar Nagar to Salarpur in Azamgarh, which will be 43.035 km long. The Gorakhpur link expressway has a right-of-way (ROW) of 110 meters.

Work started on this expressway project from February 10, 2020, and till October 11, 2021 Gorakhpur link expressway land acquisition is almost complete with 96.19 % of the total land needed for execution of the project acquired. The project is on the right track with 10.2021environmental approval and an NOC from the Department of Forest in process.

The Gorakhpur link expressway is a total access controlled expressway and will have provisions of service road, underpasses for vehicles, pedestrians and animals. The project is believed to have around 2 toll plazas, 3 ramp plaza, 27 minor bridges, more than 50 vehicular underpass for light vehicles, 16 vehicular underpasses and more than 30 pedestrian underpasses.  

According to the UP Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), as on November 23, 2021, the overall progress with respect to Gorakhpur link expressway is 30%.

While the Gorakhpur link expressway was to be completed by March 2022, several media reports suggest that the expressway may be operational only by March 2023.
