How to obtain a PAN card: offline and online?

What is a PAN card?

PAN is an abbreviation of Permanent Account Number that acts as an identification number issued by the Income Tax department of India. PAN cards aggregate tax information and maintain details of the tax-based transaction. A PAN card is necessary for filing IT returns, opening a bank account, or an FD account. You can apply for PAN on two government websites: TIN-NSDL or UTIITSL.

Documents that can be submitted as a birth certificate when applying for a PAN card

  • A birth certificate affidavit
  • Marriage certificate affidavit
  • Government Pension slip
  • Domicile government certificates
  • Identity card issued by the Central or state government (Aadhaar)
  • Identity card issued by PSU or State public sector
  • Passport or driving licence

Documents that can be submitted as residential proof when applying for a PAN card

How to apply for a PAN card offline?

Step 1: Visit Protean eGov Technologies Limited –  https://www.tin-nsdl.com/.

Step 2: Choose PAN from the download tab and go to Form 49A if you are an Indian resident.

Step 3: Download Form 49A.

Step 4: Fill in the necessary information in Form 49A.

Step 5: Paste your passport size photo in 49A and attach the necessary documents. 

Step 6: Pay Rs 110 via cash or demand draft.

Step 7: On the face of the envelope write your PAN application acknowledgement number.

Step 8: Send the envelope to ‘Income Tax PAN Service Unit, Protean eGov Technologies Limited e-Governance Infrastructure Limited. 5th Floor, Mantri Sterling, Plot No.341. Survey No. 997/8, Model Colony, Near Deep Bungalow Chowk, Pune – 411016.’

If you don’t hold any PAN card and want to apply for a PAN card, you need to fill in form 49A or 49AA, depending on whether you are a resident of India or a non-resident Indian (NRI).

Step 1: Go to the NSDL website and apply for a new PAN card.

Step 2: Select your application – New PAN card for Indian resident or NRI

Step 3: Confirm the category – HUF, individual, or company

Step 4: Fill in all the required details like name, date of birth, email address, and your number 

Step 5: You will get a message on your mobile to confirm your number

Step 6: Click on the ‘continue with the PAN Application Form’ tab

Step 7: Submit your E-KYC

Step 8: Select whether you need a physical or electronic version of the PAN card and punch in the last four digits of the Aadhar card number.

Step 9: Share your details like name, address, etc

Step 10: Submit the appropriate form and sign a declaration

Step 11: Submit the first eight digits of your PAN card number on the application

Step 12: Select the e-KYC option to verify your Aadhaar card details like home address and date of birth and click on proceed

Step 13: Make your payment through demand draft, credit card, or debit card. The charges for applying for PAN are Rs 93 for an Indian resident address and Rs 864 for a foreign resident address.

Step 14: To authenticate your Aadhar number, an OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number

Step 15: Click on ‘continue with e-sign’ and enter your twelve-digit Aadhaar number. An OTP will be sent to the mobile number that is linked to your Aadhaar card.

Step 16: Enter that OTP, and you will receive an acknowledge slip entailing your date of birth as your password.

UTIITSL website: How to apply for a PAN card?

Step 1: On this website, choose PAN Services and select ‘PAN card for Indian resident or NRI’

Step 2: Select the tab ‘New PAN card’ and form 49A

Step 3: Just like the NSDL website, you get an option of either the ‘physical mode’ or ‘Digital mode’ for filling the form.

Step 4: Fill in your personal and mandatory details

Step 5: After verifying your details, submit your application

Step 6: Make payment through net banking, demand draft, credit card, or debit card

Step 7: You will get the confirmation of the payment

Step 8: Attach 2 passport size photographs to a form and affirm it with your signature

Step 9: Attach the necessary documents verifying your identity, address, and proof of birth with the form. Submit the form to the nearest UTIITSL office

Applying for reprinting of PAN card through NSDL website

Step 1: Open the Protean eGov Technologies Limited government website.

Step 2: Select the tab named ‘Change/Correction in PAN Card.

Step 3: Click on ‘Apply for Change/Correction in PAN Card details and fill in your details.

Step 4: Make Payments for your service.

Step 5: Take the acknowledgement payment slip and attach the necessary documents and post it to the Protean eGov Technologies Limited Office.

Step 6: Prove your existing PAN card by showcasing it either in digital or physical form

Can you change the details on your PAN card?

Yes, you can change your details on your PAN card. To do so, choose the ‘changes in PAN card’ tab. You can also apply for a reprinting of a PAN card if:

  • Your PAN card is broken or damaged
  • You have misplaced your PAN card

 

FAQs

What is the validity of a PAN card?

A PAN card is valid for life and does not need renewal. However, in case of changes, you will have to apply for changing the information service on the government website.

Can you have more than one PAN card?

According to the India Law, having more than one PAN card is illegal. If you have two PAN cards, you need to close one PAN account.

How does a physical PAN card get delivered?

The Indian government will post your PAN card through Indian Post. It usually takes one month for a PAN card to get delivered.
