The Origins: Vastu Purusha Mandala

According to Hindu mythology, Brahma is the creator of the cosmos. While attempting to generate life in the cosmos, he came up with a cosmic being, “Vastu Purusha”, who was not your average man. With an insatiable desire, he ate anything that came into his path.

In a matter of minutes, he had grown so large that his shadow had created a permanent eclipse over the whole planet. Lord Shiva and Vishnu pleaded with Brahma to intervene before this ever-growing Vastu Purusha caused the eventual annihilation of the cosmos.

After realising this, Brahma requested assistance from the Ashta Dikpalakas (the gods and guardians of the eight cardinal directions). The Vastu Purusha was pinned to the ground by 45 gods, including Brahma, in all. When Brahma took hold of him, the other gods flocked to grab hold of his arms, legs, and other portions of his body. In this position, his head is to the North, and his legs are to the South.

The Vastu Purusha started to sob and beseeched Brahma for assistance at this juncture. He reminded everyone that Brahma was his creator, every quality he had was in reality given to him by Brahma himself; thus, he mentioned not being penalised for this. Brahma agreed with him and determined that he should be rewarded somehow.

Brahma transformed Vastu Purusha into an eternal creature and an indivisible entity of the Earth. The Vastu Purusha shall be worshiped by mortals who construct any edifice on Earth over the millennia, according to his blessings. Those who refuse to realise this can be teased to their hearts’ content by Vastu Purusha, who has unlimited patience. As a result, the Vastu Purusha Mandala was created.

Every minute detail of every single building or construction on the face of the planet is based on the principles of Vastu Purusha Mandala architecture, which is based on Hindu mythology. It begins with the excavation of an empty plot. It continues until the completion of the construction, with Brahma and the 44 deities (a total of 45 deities) known as energy fields gradually occupying their predetermined positions as the edifice progresses. The Vastu Purusha Mandala has been the foundation of Vastu design for temples, homes, offices, and industries for thousands of years.

Vastu Purusha Mandala dictates that the floor plan of a structure, especially its main gate, be designed in line with the principles of Vastu. If this is done, it will provide abundant riches to its residents.

Vastu Purusha Mandala is drawn in square charts to indicate the typical form of the plot. However, to facilitate better comprehension, it is shown in the 360-degree chart format, which is generally more popular, as shown above. It consists of 45 gods, of which 13 are inner gods, and the remaining 32 are outside gods. They reflect a variety of aspects of everyday life. In the arrangement of rooms and other house areas, the traits of the god who controls the section in question are channeled via the home’s structure.

The principles of  Vastu Purusha mandala architecture have been developed in line with geographical circumstances. It has been considered how they might be used in a structure by using appropriate energy sources for the public’s benefit of renewable natural resources.

Aspects of Vastu Purusha mandala architecture include the concept of using magnetic waves emanating from the North Pole and sun rays emanating from the East while deciding on building orientations for the home. According to Vastu Chakra, the building is created so that there is no obstruction to the passage of these magnetic waves and sun rays through the structure.

Where should the Vastu Purusha be located in the house?

Whatever your situation, whether you are constructing a house from the ground up or purchasing a prefabricated home, you can always incorporate the blessings of the Vastu Purusha Mandala into your home and life. Following the Vastu Purusha Mandala architecture, the following is a guideline for the critical positions of rooms:

  • North East: Pooja room or prayer room

‘Brahma Muhurta’ refers to the time between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m., immediately before dawn. The Sun at this time is situated in the house’s North-Easterly wing. Because of the serenity and quiet, these are the best times to practice yoga, meditate, or do homework. Therefore, the ‘Pooja’ chamber or prayer/meditation room should be located in the North-East corner.

  • East: Windows/doors/ bathrooms

As dawn approaches, the sun rises to an easterly position in the house, making its appearance between 6 and 7.30 am. East is a suitable position for a bathroom solely used for bathing. As a bonus, the East of the home should be completely open and free of barriers so that the morning Sun’s rays may reach the house.

  • South East: Kitchen

The optimum time to prepare meals to be consumed later in the day is between 7.30 and 9 a.m. when the Sun is in the South-East section of the house. Ultraviolet rays positively impact both human health and environmental health when they are most concentrated in the early morning hours. In general, these beams are effective in killing microorganisms.

  • South: Bedroom/storeroom/office

The workday begins at 9:00 a.m., and the first half ends at noon. Because the Sun is currently in the South, the greatest location for an office and a room is here. In the South, the heat peaks around midday, making it perfect for storing items that need to be kept dry.

Children often study from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m before heading to the playground. This is the best place to put a children’s room or a study room since the Sun is towards the West.

  • North West: Living room/guest bedroom/ dining

At 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., when the Sun is in the northwest corner of the home, most people like to unwind. Rooms that demand a lot of movement should be located here.
