What Ann M. Martin has to say about the new series
“I’m amazed that there are so many passionate fans of The Baby Sitters Club after all these years, and I’m honored to continue to hear from readers now grown, who have become writers, editors, teachers, librarians, filmmakers who say that they see a reflection of themselves in the characters of Kristy and her friends,” author Ann M. Martin said in a statement.
“So I’m very excited about the forthcoming series on Netflix, which I hope will inspire a new generation of readers and leaders everywhere.”
More than 30 years ago, the first Baby Sitters Club book appeared. After Scholastic’s editor suggested that a series of four books about babysitting clubs be published, Martin wrote Kristy’s Great Idea. Scholastic decided to continue publishing the original books after they were so popular. A new book was published every month at one time. In 2000, the series was discontinued.
How many Baby Sitter Club books are there?
Scholastic published 213 Baby Sitters Club titles between 1986 and 2000. The core series included 131 novels, 15 Super Specials, three dozen mysteries, and many other books that featured the characters Marin invented.
Many spin off series was also inspired by the Baby Sitters Club, including Baby Sitters Little Sister about Karen, the younger stepsister, and California Diaries, which was focused on Dawn, a club member who returned to California after her move.
Martin’s name was on all the books’ covers, but she didn’t write all of them. Scholastic hired ghostwriters to assist Martin and keep up with the demand for stories about babysitters.

How many books did Martin write? The author isn’t sure. Publisher’s Weekly reported that she estimated she wrote between 60-80 of the original novels. Martin was involved in every aspect of a story, even when a ghostwriter was working on it. Martin was involved in creating the outline, editing, and approval of the books before publication.
The publisher hired a group of highly vetted ghostwriters to complete the books, including Nola Thacker, Peter Lerangis, and Ellen Miles. The team used a Mental Floss bible to verify each character’s eye color and hobbies.
Netflix believes that the original books are popular enough to warrant a TV series. They have sold over 180 million copies. In 1990, HBO aired 13 episodes of the adaptation. Scholastic may even revive the series and produce new Baby Sitters Club stories to appeal to a new generation.

The Baby-Sitters Club Graphic Nolls: What’s New?
We cannot imagine Stacey McGill, fashionista and expert babysitter, without her long hair. But Galligan’s version has a more dramatic blonde bob. This is not all. Artsy Claudia had a hairstyle that matched her personality, with pink bangs.
Although die-hard BSC fans may be familiar with the order of the books, Telgemeier chose to illustrate Book #7: Claudia And The Mean Janine instead of Claudia And the Phantom Phone Caller, which was the original book in the series. She believes that the former did a better job of exploring Claudia’s personality.
The Baby Sitters Club graphic novel also helps the series’ audience. They are much more appealing than plain text because they feature colorful illustrations and vivid scenes. Each artist who illustrated the books has a unique style. Both artists capture the expressions of the characters perfectly.
With all of this in mind, I decided to rank graphic novels in terms of visuals, readability, and how enjoyable I thought the stories were. Here’s how The Baby Sitters Club Graphic Novels Series ranks.
1. Claudia And Mean Janine (The Babysitters Club Graphix #4)
There are many reasons why I think this book is my favorite. Growing up in a tight knit family with three siblings and living with my grandparents, I have always been drawn to family arcs. This is, however, one of Claudia’s most memorable stories.
That’s why Telgemeier illustrated it. Claudia’s story is my favorite. Many illustrations show Claudia’s personality through her bedroom, jewelry, and other items. Her perception of Janine as a younger sibling translated particularly well to comic form.
2. Mary Anne Saves The Day (The Babysitters Club Graphix #3)

Mary Anne was my favorite character from the series. Her quiet, gentle nature was the one I most admired among all the girls. Although the series is a celebration of friendship between the girls, this was the first moment it was put to the test.
The cover illustration is what I love the most about this series. Mary Anne’s expression is very different from the character. This makes the story even more fascinating. This is the beginning of Mary Anne’s journey to leaving her father’s shadow and becoming herself.
3. The Truth About Stacey (The Babysitters Club Graphix #2
This one is my favorite because it addresses an important topic while keeping to the light theme of the series. This one also has some fascinating illustrations. Stacey was always the confident, cool girl outside. But the images in this book show her inner thoughts and feelings.
A noticeable shift in her perception of New York City and Stoneybrook is also evident. Storywise, I love this book for the way things turn out. It just goes to show that people are not all the same.
4. Kristy’s Big Day (The Babysitters Graphix #6)
A wedding is a joy for everyone! It was great to see Kristy cope with all the new challenges that presented themselves. It’s hard for someone like Kristy to adjust to a new way of life. It’s one of few books that shows Kristy’s vulnerable side, and it’s lovely to see. It’s also great that she focuses on her mum, as I have grown to love her character after watching the series.
5. Dawn And The Impossible Three (The Babysitters Club Graphix #5)
It is Dawn’s first book in this series. I believe it gives a great introduction to Dawn. Gale Galligan illustrated it. I love the way Dawn’s long, blonde hair is shown. This book’s cover makes it seem as if it has a life all its own.
6. Boy Crazy Stacey (The Baby Sitters Club Graphix #7)
This story was not one I liked when I was younger. This was probably because it was the storyline I struggled to relate to. There are many more things to this book than I remember. Stacey’s love affair with her husband and how important it was for her to have friends even when she was in love can be discussed.
Each book begins with a brief introduction to Stacey’s diabetes. Galligan’s illustrations add a new twist to it. Children will find it easier to understand complex topics thanks to the style, colors, and even a diagram of their digestive system.
7. Kristy’s Great Idea (The Baby Sitters Club Graphix #1)
This book is the first in the series. This one wasn’t as special, whether it was because I loved the first one or because the stories went deeper into certain storylines. It does have its charm, however.
It was the beginning of a series that has changed my life. It is the reason I am writing this article ten years later than I did when I first read them.
