With an intention to provide swift connectivity to commuters traveling from the eastern side of the National Capital Region (NCR), the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE), also known as the Kundli-Ghaziabad-Palwal Expressway, was approved in 2015. Along with the Western Peripheral Expressway (WPE), this 135-km-long expressway completes the largest ring road corridor around national capital Delhi.

Eastern Peripheral Expressway map and route
Declared as the National Expressway-2, the corridor starts from Sonipat and passes through Baghpat, Ghaziabad, Greater Noida in UP and Faridabad in Haryana, before ending at Palwal. It meets the WPE in Sonipat and Palwal.

Eastern Peripheral Expressway exit points
For commuters, there are seven exit points on the EPE. All these exit points are named after the villages such as Baghpat, Duhai, Dasna, Dadri and Atali-Chasna, leading towards Meerut, Ghaziabad, Moradabad, Noida, Greater Noida and Faridabad.

Eastern Peripheral Expressway: Features and interesting facts
- This is one of the first expressways to have a closed tolling system, in which the toll will be collected only on the distance travelled and not on the entire length.
- There are facilities for rainwater collection every 500 metres. Around 2.5 lakh trees were planted along the highway, which are watered using a drip irrigation system.
- The EPE also has a cycle track of 2.5 metres width on both sides.
- To curb speeding of vehicles, the expressway has an auto challan system. Cameras have been set up at different locations to capture the speed of the vehicles.
- The EPE is also installed with solar panels, to provide power to lights along the road. It is also India’s first smart and green highway.
- The EPE has around 406 structures, including four major bridges, 46 minor bridges, three flyovers, seven interchanges, 221 underpasses and eight railway over-bridges (ROBs).
- The total cost of construction for the EPE was Rs 11,000 crores.
- ‘The expressway became fully operational when prime minister Narendra Modi inaugurated it, in May 2018.
- The EPE has been connected with the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and will soon be linked with the Yamuna Expressway via a planned interchange at an intermediate location.

As compared to other expressways, the EPE has a higher speed limit of 120 kmph. Consultations are ongoing, to increase the average speed on multi-lane expressway corridors.
