Yes, Wrecking ball, the 14th Diary of a Wimpy Kid, is in my hands. It will be out on November 5, 2019. I plan to continue writing books for as long as children are still reading them.

Did you always want to be a writer?

Yes, I was born wanting to be a cartoonist in a newspaper, but no one would syndicate my work. When I managed to sneak my comics into books, I was finally successful.

When did you start writing books? What made you decide to write books for kids?

In 2007, Wimpy Kid’s first book was published. Wimpy Kid was my first book. It took me eight years to complete it. I believed I was writing a massive manuscript for adults (roughly 1,300 pages).

It was intended to be a reflection of middle school life. After finding an editor who liked it, I was informed that what I had written was not a book for adults but a children’s book series.

Where do you get the ideas for your characters? Are the books based on your childhood?

The Heffley family is loosely based upon my own family. Greg is a combination of my worst moments from childhood. I try to recall funny memories from my childhood. Then I add those memories into the fiction blender. Sometimes they end up in the books.

How long does it take you to write a book?

A Wimpy Kid book takes nine months to make; six months to think up all the jokes (I need 350), one month to write, and two months to illustrate.

What is your favorite book in the series?

Because I had no success before the first, my favorite will always remain the first. The ninth is my favorite – it’s one of the most compelling stories I’ve ever told.

Who is your favorite character in the series?

Rowley is my favorite character. He loves being a child and isn’t in any hurry to grow up. That is what I love about Rowley.

What is your favorite book? Who is your favorite author?

Growing up, Judy Blume was my favorite author. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye. Now, I will read anything by Malcolm Gladwell or Bill Bryson.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

First, I would encourage an aspiring illustrator or author to develop an original idea and nurture it. Although it can take many years to develop a winning idea, it is worth the effort. The second step is to try writing a story that resembles the style of someone you admire.

This will help you understand their style and make it easier to create your own. This will help you to develop your style. Find someone willing to give honest criticism.
