How do we estimate the weight of a book?

Parts of a book
Guesstimating weight
To estimate the weight of a book, we first need to understand its parts. The basic anatomy of a book is:
- Cover and pages (paper)
- Backbone (spine)
- End sheets (glue between the spine and cover material)
- Front board and backboard (partitions around which boards are covered with cloth or paper Material (cloth, paper, and leather)
Size of a box
Box sizes factor into the calculation of book weight. The standard size is 42″ x 52″ x 48″. If you’ve ever had to move a large collection of books, or have seen how much stuff is in an antique store, it’s hard to underestimate the space needed for storage. How many cubic feet are in that box?
The hardest part is estimating the weight of a box before you know the density; you need 3 estimates because they don’t all have to add up exactly:
Density of paper
The mass of a material is its weight divided by its volume, often expressed in units such as pounds per cubic foot. Paper weighs about 40lbs/ft3(PCF), or 160g/cm3, which is just under the density of water one reason paper feels so much lighter than a solid book.
Materials can vary widely in density: cotton (2.6-3g/cm3 or 0.87 to 1 pcf); wool (0.35-0.65g/cm3 or 0.028 to 0.04 pcf); and leather (0.13-0.37g/cm3 or 0.02 to 0.06 pcf)
Putting it together
What are the limits of what a person can move by hand in terms of weight and size? The estimates are wildly different because we don’t have the full picture. We have some experience of moving boxes of books, having a general idea of their average weight and size, and knowing what else might move with the other stuff in closets or storage areas.

How much do books weigh per linear foot?
The second part of this is estimating how many linear feet fit in a standard shipping container. With a little arithmetic, we can figure out the weight of books per linear foot by multiplying two estimates.
As you can see, it’s important to be consistent with your units. What’s more relevant the weight or the mass? The size of your book collection determines how much stuff you have to move and whether you dare hire a crew to do it.
Let’s look at sizes in terms of units we already know the length of a mattress and the height and width of an average bookcase. Both are more relevant than the mass (weight) or volume (cubic feet).
