The Differences Between Kindle Unlimited vs Prime Reading
Let’s now discuss what makes Prime Reading and Kindle Unlimited different. There are two main differences between these two services.
Amazon Prime subscription is the first. Prime Reading is one of many benefits that Amazon Prime subscription offers. Amazon Prime memberships are available for $119 per year. Annual membership costs $119, while a monthly subscription costs $12.99.
On the other hand, Kindle Unlimited is a standalone subscription service that can be purchased regardless of whether you are a Prime member. Kindle Unlimited costs $9.99 per month and is a monthly program.
You can get a trial for Kindle Unlimited and Prime Reading. This allows you to test them both before you decide which one is best for you.
Amazon Prime Reading Catalog includes approximately 1000 titles. Although the number of eligible books may seem small, there are two important things to remember:
- The rotating list of titles can be found here
- Prime membership includes other services.
The second difference and this is the most important of the two, is what titles are available for each service. Prime Reading subscription allows you to access a little more than 1,000 titles, which rotate out every few weeks.
Kindle Unlimited allows you to access over 1,000,000 titles. Prime Reading titles are only a small part of the Kindle Unlimited collection.
Subscription comparison
Prime Reading and Kindle Unlimited are both subscription based services. However, there is one significant difference:
- Kindle Unlimited is a subscription service that can be purchased separately.
- Prime Reading subscription is part of an Amazon Prime subscription.
It doesn’t make sense to compare these two services one to 1.
Kindle Unlimited costs $9.99 per month. You get only that service.
Prime Reading is but it’s not the only benefit to Amazon Prime membership. Amazon Prime membership costs $12.99 per month and offers many benefits including:
- Two-day free shipping to all addresses within the contiguous US
- Delivery available same day in some areas
- Prime Instant Video – Unlimited streaming of movies and TV shows
- Prime Music Unlimited Access to Millions of Songs and Playlists
- Free access to original audio content via Audible channels
Prime Reading is only one benefit you have but it’s not the most important. Prime membership is a great way to get video streaming and two day shipping.

Which Program is Better?
The Kindle Unlimited program is an excellent choice for an avid reader looking to discover new authors and explore the latest literary trends.
It’s worth it if you read five to ten new books per month. You might prefer the more expensive audiobooks or books.
Kindle Unlimited might not be the best choice if you are an occasional reader.
Many e-books are inexpensive and can be purchased for as low as $0.99 to $4.99. If you read books in the lower price range, the subscription will make economic sense if you read between five and nine books per month.
However, most avid readers will be able quickly to cover the subscription’s cost after reading a few books each month.
Prime Reading is for those who want to read more mainstream books by well respected authors.
Amazon Prime subscriptions include Prime Video (free video watching), Prime Music, unlimited photo storage, and free delivery for two hours, one day, and two days. There are even discounts on Spotify and Netflix!
If you frequently shop on Amazon and want access to Amazon’s movie and music libraries, the Prime program may be a better option.
Both programs come with a 3-day free trial, so you can try them both and decide which one suits your needs best.
You can also choose to switch between the memberships depending on your needs. It’s a great time to test Kindle Unlimited while on vacation.
You don’t have to worry about the risk, as you can cancel at any time.
