Jerry Pallotta Biography

Jerry Pallotta is an award-winning author of imaginative fiction and alphabet books for children. His combination of interesting facts, detailed research, and humor create a captivating experience for children.

Jerry spent his teenage years fishing in Scituate (Massachusetts), where he caught lobsters and harvested seaweed. He also rode on fishing draggers. He wanted to share his love of the seashore with his kids but couldn’t find an alphabet book that was both fun and interesting. He was inspired to create The Ocean Alphabet Book, which featured oceanic creatures in an imaginative format.

Jerry was an insurance salesman when he started writing. His first book was written, edited, and produced in his garage. It sold 5,000 copies to New England Aquarium and became a bestseller. Jerry spent his time writing full-time and made appearances at schools and libraries. Charlesbridge has published many books by Jerry, including The Icky Bug Algebet Book, Dory Story, and Butterfly Counting.

Jerry is a dynamic speaker and visits elementary schools across the country to inspire children to make their alphabet books. He gives lectures at universities and conferences to encourage reading and writing.

Children of all ages, especially seven to nine children, will enjoy Jerry’s books because of his beautiful illustrations, witty writing, and precise descriptions. Jerry lives in Massachusetts.

He attended high school at Boston College High School. It is a Jesuit school for all-boys in downtown Boston. He was astonished by the kindness of priests and other teachers. He played football and ran track. He had an excellent high school experience, and he believes it helped him in college.

His sons, Neil and Eric, graduated from Boston College High School respectively in 2001 and 2003. Neil was named after Fr. Neil Callahan, S.J. He never wrote a book while in high school and never wrote for his school’s newspaper. He was afraid of what others would think and was too shy.

Teachers told him that they wanted short, non-fiction nature books while he was speaking at school. He was able to feel confident in his writing. His next book, “The Icky Bug Alphabet Book,” sold over 1,000,000 copies. Birders World Magazine voted his third book, “The Bird Alphabet Book,” one of the year’s top books. There are now over twenty alphabet books and twenty math books.

He also has the Icky Bug books. A holiday series, a U.S. Military series called Who Would Win? Books, a biography, and a few stories. His goal was to create children’s books that are interesting, fact-filled, and fun to read. We are grateful to his illustrators, Frank Mazzola Jr., Rob Bolster, and Edgar Stewart. He now visits more than 150 schools each year. Guess what? You will find…KIDS EVERYWHERE!
