Louis Dearborn LaMoore, the youngest of seven siblings, was born in Jamestown in North Dakota in 1908. Louis Charles LaMoore was his father and a veterinarian. He loved boxing, which he taught to his three sons. His mother, Emily Dearborn LaMoore, was a teacher and had been introduced before she married. She loved to tell her children stories about western and family history.

As a boy, he listened to stories about his family’s French-Irish ancestors, who were rugged, westward-moving frontiersmen and women. His roots in America can be traced back to at least the 1600s. His great-grandfather had served in the Civil War, and his grandfather was also a soldier. These stories were the basis for his fascination with westerns. Louis, then 15, left school to travel and work in Oklahoma when his family moved there in 1923. He also changed his surname spelling from LaMoore to L’Amour.

L’Amour had a wide range of experiences and jobs during his “wondering years,” which he later called “wondering.” L’Amour joined the circus as an elephant handler. He also worked as a longshoreman and lumberjack and as a miner. He worked with bandits in Tibet and skinned cattle in Texas. He also served as a schooner in East Africa. He was a passionate reader and collector of rare books. He was also a professional boxer and won 51 of 59 matches.
