In an effort to manage plastic waste in the city, the Noida Authority has started using plastic waste along with bituminous concrete, in the construction of a road in the city

To manage plastic waste in the city, the Noida Authority has started using it in construction of a road in the city. The construction work began September 13, 2019, along both the lanes of the expressway on a 2.5-km-long stretch between Sector 14A and the Filmcity Flyover where plastic waste has been used along with bituminous concrete on both sides of the road, the authority said. “The authority is making efforts for the better disposal of plastic waste and this initiative is a part of that. Also, the roads thus constructed, will have reduced cost and longer durability, as studies have suggested,” Noida Authority CEO Ritu Maheshwari said. “In the future also, all road projects in the city will include the use of plastic waste. This will help dispose plastic and be a major step towards better waste management,” she said.

Not only will the use of plastic waste in road building result in better performing roads with improved longevity, shared authority officials citing scientific studies but this move will have multiple latent benefits. “From the laboratory and field studies, it has been concluded that with the usage of processed plastics in bituminous mixes, the life of a pavement can be enhanced 2 to 3 times by the addition of 8 per cent plastic modifiers,” said general manager and chief engineer Rajeev Tyagi.

On the waste management front, garbage without plastic can be composted easily and sold to farmers as organic matter, reducing their dependence on chemical fertilisers. “Rag pickers will benefit financially as they can earn a living by selling the collected littered plastics bags. Employment opportunities will be created for a large number of people, both, directly and indirectly,” he said.

Hence, this decision,” she added. The Authority officials did not mention by when this new directive would be implemented but said it would be done ‘soon’.

Sector 18 Market Association president Sushil Kumar Jain, said the new CEO’s decision was a commendable step, which would not only send out a good message about cleanliness but also boost trade opportunities. “We had been demanding this for a long time. Earlier also, similar efforts were made but could not sustain for long. This time, we are hopeful it will work. There is also need for dustbins at various spots in markets, which will help in maintaining cleanliness,” he said.
