The union cabinet, on August 10, 2022, extended the deadline of the government’s flagship Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY) mission till December 31, 2024. The move will help states in India complete homes that have already been sanctioned under the mega housing programme.

The decision by the prime ninister Narendra-led union cabinet comes in the backdrop of the Coronavirus pandemic impairing constriction activity in the country, resulting in non-completion of a large number of houses within the previous March-2022 deadline.

“Against the original projected demand, 102 lakh houses have been grounded/under construction. Further, out of these, 62 lakh houses have been completed. Out of the total sanctioned 123 lakh houses, the proposals of 40 lakh houses were received late (during the last two years of the scheme) from the states/UTs which require another two years to complete them. Therefore, based on the requests from the states/ UTs, the union cabinet decided to extend the implementation period of PMAY-U till December 31, 2024,” a cabinet statement explained.

Launched in 2015, the scheme has a target of building 122.69 lakh houses in urban areas by August 15, 2022. Since 2015, the government has approved a central assistance of Rs 2.03 lakh crore for the programme. Of this, Rs 1,18,020.46 crore has already been released till March 31, 2022. The remaining Rs 85,406 crore will be released till the extended period of December 2024.
Recently, minister of state for housing and urban affairs, Kaushal Kishore, told the Lok Sabha that the government was mulling an extension for the PMAY-Urban at the request of states and union territory governments.

“A proposal seeking extension of the Mission up to March 2024, to complete all houses sanctioned under the scheme up to March 31, 2022, without changing the funding pattern and implementation methodology, is under consideration. Meanwhile, an interim extension of 6 months for all verticals, except the credit-linked subsidy scheme, has been granted,” the minister told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.
In December 2021, the cabinet had announced an extension to the rural vertical of the PMAY programme, the PMAU-Rural, till December 31, 2024, to achieve the target of constructing 2.95 crore houses under this vertical.
The twin verticals of the PMAY were meant to help the government fulfil its promise of providing housing to every citizen in India under its Housing for all by 2022 mission.
