CAG India: All you want to know about Comptroller and Auditor General of India

The office of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, better known as the CAG India, was established under Article 148 of the Indian Constitution. Empowered to audit books of central, state and all the government authorities in the country, the CAG India could be described as the auditor of government books.

In 1971, the central government enacted the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (Duties, Powers, and Conditions of Service) Act, 1971, to lay down the roles and responsibilities of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.

With its vision of being the ‘initiator of national and international best practices in public sector auditing and accounting and recognised for independent, credible, balanced and timely reporting on public finance and governance’, the CAG India makes sure that public funds are used efficiently and for the intended purposes. Known as the ‘Guardian of the Public Purse’, the CAG India performs the following duties:

  • The Comptroller and Auditor General of India performs duties in relation to the accounts of the union and state governments and of any other government authority or body.
  • The accounts of union and states should be kept in the form advised by the CAG India.
  • The CAG India’s reports about the central government should be submitted to the president who lays them before each house of parliament.
  • The CAG India reports about the state governments should be submitted to the governor who lays them before the legislative assembly.
