If all goes as planned, the connectivity between two major cities of Maharashtra, Mumbai and Nagpur, will become smoother and shorter as the Mumbai Nagpur Expressway is inching towards reality. Also known as the Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, the Mumbai Nagpur Expressway will run through 392 villages, across 10 districts and reduce the traveling time to seven hours between the two cities. To be built at an expense of Rs 55,000 crores, around 9,900 hectares of land have to be acquired for construction of Samruddhi Mahamarg. 10,000 hectares of land will be for developing the Krushi Samruddhi Nagar and 145 hecatres of land will be used for amenities and facilities along the Samruddhi Mahamarg.

Samruddhi Mahamarg route map

The 701-km Mumbai Nagpur Expressway/ Samruddhi Mahamarg will pass through Nagpur-Wardha-Amravati-Washim-Buldhana-Jalna-Aurangabad-Nashik-Ahmednagar-Thane. Inter-connecting highways and feeder roads would be constructed to connect all important cities and tourist places along the Mumbai Nagpur expressway route. An additional fourteen districts namely Chandrapur, Bhandara, Gondia, Gadchiroli, Yavatmal, Akola, Hingoli, Parbhani, Nanded, Beed, Dhule, Jalgaon, Palghar and Raigad will be connected because of the Samruddhi Mahamarg. The Mumbai Nagpur expressway will also connect with Maharashtra’s major tourist destinations including Shirdi (5 km), Bibi ka Maqbara (5km), Sula Vineyards (8 km), Trimbakeshwar Shiv Temple (14 km), Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary (60 km), Pench National Park (95 km) and Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (124 km).

The Samruddhi Mahamarg route map includes 50 flyovers, five tunnels, 300 vehicular underpasses and 400 pedestrian underpasses.

Samruddhi Mahamarg opening date

To be opened in phases, Samruddhi Mahamarg phase 1 opening date is May 2, 2022. The first phase of Samruddhi Mahamarg will be of 210 kms between Nagpur and Shelu Bazaar in Washim district. The second phase from Shelu Bazaar to Shirdi will be opened on August 15, 2022. Media reports suggest that the last phase of the Samruddhi expressway between Shirdi to Mumbai may be opened in mid-2023.

Previously, the implementing agency, MSRDC, mentioned that due to the nationwide lockdown following the Coronavirus pandemic, construction of Mumbai Nagpur Expressway was impacted. Therefore, the Samruddhi Mahamarg completion date was moved to December 2022, as against the earlier target of December 2021.

Implemented and executed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), Samruddhi Mahamarg is one of the completely greenfield expressways, which will be designed for speeds of up to 150 kms per hour. Around 24 townships are being planned along the Samruddhi Mahamarg route map, which will further boost economic development in some of the less-developed areas of the state. The Mumbai Nagpur Expressway/ Samruddhi Mahamarg will pass through the mountainous terrain of the Western Ghats, as well. This eight-laned Mumbai Nagpur Expressway, which will have six lanes and two additional service roads. The estimated cost of construction of the Mumbai Nagpur Expressway will be Rs 50,000 crores, while Rs 25,000 crores is likely to be spent on land acquisition for Mumbai Nagpur Expressway.

The land acquired for the Samruddhi Mahamarg project is under a pooling model, where farmers will get 30% of the developed land elsewhere. Apart from this, as part of the Mumbai Nagpur expressway project, the farmers will also get Rs 50,000 per hectare for non-irrigated land and Rs 1 lakh every year for irrigated land, for the next 10 years.

MSRDC will also be the New Town Development Authority (NTDA) for Krushi Samruddhi Nagar that will be developed along the Mumbai Nagpur expressway. Recently, the Maharashtra state government announced an extension of the Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg till Bhandara-Gondia and Gadchiroli that lie east and south east Nagpur. This is the second extension that the Samruddhi Mahamarg has got with the proposal of Jalna-Nanded .extension last year.

Samruddhi Mahamarg current status

According to media reports, the Samruddhi Mahamarg current status is that around 70% of the civil construction work is completed on the Mumbai Nagpur Expressway. Samruddhi Mahamarg will be made operational in phases from the Nagpur end of the Nagpur Mumbai Expressway. On the Mumbai end, the Mumbai Nagpur Expressway will start from Shahpur district. MSRDC mentions on the Samruddhi expressway status that the civil work will be completed shortly for the Mumbai Nagpur Expressway and work on supporting infrastructure like petrol pumps, food plaza, toilets etc. are going on.

Samruddhi Mahamarg toll rates

With the Mumbai Nagpur Expressway, the distance between Mumbai and Nagpur is 701 km. The Mumbai Nagpur Expressway will have a total of 26 toll booths. MSRDC recently floated bids for appointing the Samruddhi Mahamarg toll collection agency on the Nagpur Mumbai Expressway. According to a Hindustan Times report, the MSRDC in consultation and with approval from the Maharashtra state government has proposed Samruddhi Mahamarg toll charges. The Samruddhi Mahamarg toll charges will be officially notified by a gazette closer to the Samruddhi Mahamarg opening date.

The Samruddhi Mahamarg toll charges will be based on the distance in kms that one wants to travel. A LMV from Mumbai to Nashik will have to pay Rs 1.73 per km as Samruddhi Mahamarg toll. So, one way Samruddhi Mahamarg toll charges for light motor vehicles (LMV) will be Rs 1,212. One way Samruddhi Mahamarg toll for light commercial vehicles on the Mumbai Nagpur Expressway will be Rs 2.79 per km, which totals to Rs 1,955. One way Samruddhi Mahamarg toll for bus or truck will be Rs 5.85 per km totalling to Rs 4,100.

Heavy commercial vehicles on the Mumbai Nagpur Expressway will be charged Rs 6.38 per km or Rs 4,472, as the Samruddhi Mahamarg toll followed by Rs 9.18 per km or Rs 6,435 which are the proposed Samruddhi Mahamarg  toll for mobilising of heavy construction machinery. For oversized vehicles the Samruddhi Mahamarg toll per km is Rs 11.17 translating to Rs 7,830 between Mumbai and Nagpur.

Once functional, the Mumbai Nagpur expressway project will cut short the travel time from Mumbai to Nagpur to six to seven hours from the current 15 hours.

The Mumbai Nagpur Expressway will pass through some of the less-developed areas of the state, which may benefit from the project. Moreover, the plan to develop skill-based industries along the Mumbai Nagpur expressway can prove advantageous for the local economy, which are so far dependent on agriculture and dairy farming. Shirdi, one of the religious towns in the state will now have faster connectivity from the big cities including Nagpur and Mumbai because of the Mumbai Nagpur expressway, which may boost its potential as a second home investment destination. For Nagpur, as well, the Nagpur Mumbai expressway may bring a new dawn for its real estate sector, which has not seen much traction due to lack of growth drivers in the city.

State highway police to set up Traffic aid posts (TAPs) on Samruddhi Mahamarg

September 15, 2021: The state highway police aim to set up 24 traffic aid posts (TAP) on the Samruddhi Mahamarg. The proposal has been submitted to the MSRDC. Aurangabad district on the Samruddhi Mahamarg will have the maximum number of TAPs (4). There will be three TAPs each in Nashik and Wardha. The rest of the seven districts, namely Thane, Ahmednagar, Jalna, Buldana, Amravati, Washim and Nagpur, will have two TAPs each. Personnel deployed at the TAPs on Nagpur Mumbai expressway will be equipped with speed guns and night-vision gadgets for monitoring vehicle movement. CCTVs installed along the Samruddhi Mahamarg route will be linked with the TAPs and the state police headquarters, for tracking the real-time movement of the vehicles.

MSRDC to construct interchanges to link Samruddhi Mahamarg to districts

The MSRDC will be constructing five interchanges at Shendra, Sawangi, Maliwada, Hadas Pimpalgaon and Jambhargaon, to connect these districts with the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway. Each interchange on the Mumbai Nagpur expressway will have a toll road.

The Mumbai Nagpur expressway interchange at Jaypur will benefit vehicles from Chikalthana and Shendra MIDC areas, while the link road at Sawangi could be used by passengers traveling towards Mumbai. The Mumbai Nagpur expressway interchange at Maliwada will be advantageous for people from Aurangabad, Chawani and Padegaon areas. The Mumbai Nagpur expressway service road at Hadas Pimpalgaon will help people from Gangapur tehsil.

Mumbai Nagpur Samruddhi E-way to turn into a green corridor

The Mumbai Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway will be turned into a green corridor. The MSRDC has decided to plant 12.68 lakh trees along the road. Besides this, 12.87 lakh small plants and shrubs will be planted on the median of the Mumbai Nagpur expressway route and 3.21 lakh shrubs will be planted inside the compound wall. A solar plant of 250 MW along the Samruddhi highway corridor is planned to be set up by the government. The Samruddhi expressway green project will cost approximately Rs 900 crores, which also includes the cost of maintenance of plants and trees for seven years. Also, each tree on the Samruddhi expressway will be geo-tagged.
