What is NERGA?

A labour-centric law, the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) was later renamed the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). The NREGA is a social security measure that guarantees the ‘right to work’ for the unskilled workforce of India.

Enacted in September 2005 and launched in 2006, the MGNREGA ‘aims to enhance livelihood security in rural areas by providing a minimum of 100 days of wage employment in a financial year, to every household, whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual labour’.

The scheme currently provides 100 working days in a year to over 14.85 crore rural households in India.

NREGA jobcard

As per the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005, it is mandatory for the beneficiaries of the scheme to possess a job card, issued by the competent authority of the respective gram panchayat. Under the MG NREGA, the NREGA job card is issued to every household, whose adult members demand employment under the scheme. The MGNREGA job card holder is entitled to 100 days of manual labour.

Every year, a new NREGA jobcard is issued to each beneficiary. This MGNREGA jobcard can be easily downloaded from the official website of MGNREGA at nrega.nic.in.

The central government has been offering the MGNREGA jobcard list since 2010-11 for 35 states and union territories across the country. Based on the eligibility criteria, new beneficiaries are added to the NREGA jobcard list while certain old beneficiaries are removed.

Here is the step-wise guide to downloading the NREGA job card 2022:

Step 1: Click here to directly reach the MGNERGA jobcard official website.

Step 2: Select your state from a list that contains the names of all the states in India.

Step 3: On the next page select the financial year, district, block and panchayat and click on ‘Proceed’.

Step 4: On the next page, select the ‘Job Card/Employment Register’ option under the R1 Job Card/ Registration tab.

• Right to apply for the scheme.
• Right to a job card.
• Right to apply for work and obtain a dated receipt for the application.
• Choice of duration and time of the work applied for.
• Getting work within 15 days of applying or from the date when work is sought, in case of an advance application, whichever is later.
• Facilities for drinking water, crèche and first aid at the work site.
• Right to 10% extra wage if the employment is provided beyond a 5-km radius.
• Right to check muster rolls and get all the information regarding the employment entered in the job card.
• Right to weekly payment.

How to apply for work under the MGNREGA?

Households with adult members desirous of seeking unskilled wage employment may apply for registration in the MGNREGA. The application may be given on the prescribed form or in writing on plain paper, to the local gram panchayat. To ensure that opportunities are available to families that may migrate, NREGA registration is open throughout the year at the gram panchayat office.
