The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) London has recognised the Kolkata East-West Metro project, which has built a twin tunnel under river Hooghly, as the first of its kind in the country, as a project that has a significant impact in making people’s lives better.

“The Institution of Civil Engineers, London, UK, has recognised the Kolkata East-West Metro project of the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (KMRCL) and selected it as one of the 200 projects across the globe, which has a significant impact in making people’s lives better,” a KMRCL statement said. “It is a unique international acknowledgement for this project, amongst a handful of projects picked from India,” the statement said. KMRCL has completed construction of twin tunnels under River Hooghly, an engineering feat and the first of its kind in India.

The state-of-the-art 16.6 km-long East-West Metro system, connecting Howrah with Salt Lake Sector V, will have a 10.8-km-long underground corridor from Howrah to Subhas Sarobar in the eastern part of Kolkata, while the rest 5.8 km to Sector V will be an elevated corridor. Work for the underground corridor is now on in full swing in the Dalhousie area, the city’s oldest business and office hub.
