Bellandur lake toxic froth will be solved in 2 years: Karnataka CM

[ecis2016.org] As Bengaluru’s Bellandur lake continued to spew toxic froth, raising concerns among residents in its vicinity, the Karnataka chief minister has said that the problem will be solved in one or two years

Torrential rains that hit Bengaluru over the last few days, have caused thick froth to spill on to the road from Bellandur lake, causing inconvenience to commuters driving along the stretch. Videos, showing cars being engulfed by a large pack of froth, purportedly taken near the lake, have now gone viral.

Residents near the lake were the worst hit, with froth flying all over the area and a strong stench emerging from the polluted water. Residents have also expressed fear about developing diseases, if they come in contact with the froth.

Speaking to reporters in Delhi about the frothing lakes in Bengaluru, Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah, assured that the government was taking all necessary actions. When pointed out that this was a long standing issue, he said, “It is there. It will be solved in one or two years.”

The statement from chief minister came at a time, when the National Green Tribunal (NGT), on August 17, 2017, reportedly pulled up the state government regarding the pollution of the lake and asked it to submit compliance report on its earlier direction, on August 22.

Earlier, the NGT banned the dumping of any kind of waste near the Bellandur lake and in April, it had directed that industries near the water body be shut.
