The country’s much-talked about Statue of Unity is a tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, known as the Iron Man of India. At 182 metres in height (597 ft), Statue of Unity is constructed on the isle of Sadhu Bet Island, close to the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada River.

The Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue, is twice the height of the Statue of Liberty in New York and around four times the height of Christ the Redeemer in Brazil. The Statue of Unity was inaugurated by prime minister Narendra Modi on October 31, 2018, on the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Statue of Unity: The making

Surrounded by the Vindhyachal and Satpuda Mountain ranges, the Statue of Unity is built on a scenic location that faces the Sardar Sarovar Dam which is 3.2 kms away from the statue. The Statue of Unity depicts Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s belief and vision on unity, good governance, growth and patriotism.

While it was announced in 2010, work on the Statue of Unity started in October 2013. The Statue of Unity was constructed using scarp materials that was collected from all across the country. Designed by Indian sculptor Ram V Sutar, the statue was constructed by Larsen & Toubro. Close to 3,000 workers and over 250 engineers worked on this project. The total cost of construction of the Statue of Unity was around Rs 2,700 crores. The Statue of Unity covers an area of more than two acres and is surrounded by an artificial lake that is 12 kms long.

Statue of Unity: The features

Being 182 metres high, the Statue of Unity is higher than the previous record holder – the Spring Temple Buddha in China by 54 metres (177 ft).

Divided into five zones, the Statue of Unity has opened up three zones for the public. The fourth zone is the maintenance zone and the fifth zone is one that has the head and shoulder of the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The first zone of Statue of Unity has a museum, an exhibition area and a memorial garden. The first zone is from the base of the statue to the shin. While the second zone reaches till the thigh of the statue, the third zone reaches to a height of 153 metres – till the viewing gallery.

Statue of Unity: Positive impact

Located in Narmada district of Gujarat, the Statue of Unity plays a big role in boosting the tourism in Gujarat. Presence of the world’s largest statue has had great impact on many sectors in Gujarat including the real estate segment. The Statue of Unity made it to TIME magazine’s list of 100 greatest places of 2019.

Statue of Unity: Timings

The Statue of Unity opens at 8 in the morning and is open till 6 in the evening from Tuesday to Sunday. Also, one can enjoy the laser light and sound show daily after 7 pm fromTuesday to Sunday. The Statue of Unity is closed on Mondays for maintenance. The cost of a ticket for an adult is Rs 150 and the cost of a ticket for a child (three years to 15 years) is Rs 90.
