KMP Expressway details
The Western Peripheral Expressway (WPE) or KMP Expressway, is maintained by the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC). Together with the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE), the KMP Expressway makes up for the largest ring road in Delhi.
Plans to construct the KMP Highway on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) model from NH-1 near Kundli, Sonipat to NH-2 near Palwal along with the EPE, was proposed in 2003. The state of New Delhi had agreed to pay half of the land acquisition cost of the KMP Expressway, as the state would benefit from the diversion of vehicular traffic away from it. While the state of Haryana started work on the KMP Expressway in 2006, commercial operations of the Expressway were delayed by more than a decade. After the intervention of the Supreme Court of India, new bids were invited in January 2016 and the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway was finally completed and became operational in November 2018.
The KMP Expressway is a six-lane greenfield highway that is elevated at road junctions, has underpasses for cattle, cars and tractors, barricades to control the entry of animals and 24×7 surveillance. The Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway project helps in smooth and quick transportation of surplus foodgrains, milk products, fruits and vegetables from Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir to other parts of India.
KMP Highway total cost
The KMP Highway, which was upgraded from a four-lane expressway to a six-lane expressway, cost a total of Rs 9,000 crores. Of this, Rs 2,988 crores was spent on land acquisition and Rs 6,400 crores was spent on the construction of the KMP Expressway.

Western Peripheral Expressway toll rate
The Western Peripheral Expressway has a total of 10 entry and exit points that are manned by toll booths. As notified in December 2018, the toll rates are Rs 1.35 per km for cars, Rs 2.18 per km for light motor vehicles (LMVs) and Rs 4.98 per km for heavy motor vehicles (HMVs) on the KMP Expressway. The toll plazas on the KMP Expressway have been operational since December 2018. Note that two-wheelers are not allowed on the KMP Expressway.
In addition to these toll points, the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway also has 23 overpasses and 52 underpasses, including those at the state and national highway crossings and agricultural vehicular underpasses. The KMP Expressway has approximately 31 cattle crossing passages and 61 pedestrian crossing passages.
Kundli Manesar Palwal Expressway inauguration
The 135.6-km-long KMP Expressway was divided into two parts and inaugurated at different times. Road transport minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the 53-km stretch between Manesar and Palwal in April 2016. The remaining 83-km stretch of the KMP Expressway between Kundli and Manesar was inaugurated on November 19, 2018, by prime minister Narendra Modi.

KMP Expressway speed limit
While the central government had set the speed limit for LMVs and HMVs at 120 kms per hour and 100 kms per hour, respectively, the Haryana government put a speed restriction of 80 kmph for LMVs and 60 kmph for HMVs between Manesar and Kundli on 83 kms of the KMP Expressway. This was done with the intent to discourage people from speeding, thus, minimising accidents.

KMP Expressway public convenience facilities
The KMP Expressway has several public convenience facilities. The six-lane expressway includes fuel stations, truck stops, bus stands, a medical trauma centre with a helipad, traffic police stations, food courts and recreational facilities. To attend to any kind of emergency or accident, an ambulance, a police patrol vehicle and a crane are made available at every 20 kms, on the KMP Expressway.
KMP Expressway multi-modal transit stations
The HSIIDC, which manages the KMP Expressway, is also working towards building five multi-modal transit stations (MMTS) along the KMP Expressway. The land has already been acquired for building the MMTS and the exact locations have been earmarked, as mentioned below:
MMTS | Location |
Bahadurgarh MMTS | Between the Bahadurgarh bus stand and the Bahadurgarh metro station |
Balramgarh MMTS | Between Balramgarh railway station and the Raja Nahar Singh metro station |
Kherki Daula MMTS | Between Kherki Daula in Gurugram, the Delhi-Alwar RRTS station (under construction), and the bus stand on the Chhapra and Naihati village junction |
Kundli MMTS | Between Rajiv Gandhi Education City and the Delhi-Panipat RRTS station (under construction) |
Panchagaon Chowk MMTS | At Manesar’s Panchgaon Chowk between the proposed metro station and the Delhi-Alwar RRTS station (under construction), Gurugram-Manesar Metro, and Jhajjar-Palwal rail line |
KMP Expressway traffic management
The KMP Expressway covers cities in Haryana including Badli, Jhajjar, Manesar, Sonipat, Kharkhoda, Nuh, Bahadurgarh, Palwal, Sohna and Hathin. With close to 50,000 heavy vehicles being diverted away from the state of New Delhi, the KMP Expressway helps in traffic decongestion. This also minimises pollution in New Delhi, thereby, improving the quality of air, which is a major cause of concern for people in the state.
