AMD Ryzen 7 5800X vs Ryzen 7 3700X Comparison

Specs

Today, we will be focusing on the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X desktop processor performance and comparing it to the Ryzen 7 3700X. The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X was released in November 2020 at an MSRP of $449. This CPU runs on the AMD Zen 3 architecture and the socket AM4, which is superior to the Zen 2 architecture of the Ryzen 7 3700X.

Zen 3 is a better CPU than Zen 2. Zen 3 offers +19% more instructions per cycle (IPC). Zen 2 CPUs have this advantage. This involves a reorganization of cores in the CCX complexes and how the CCDs have been laid out inside the package to optimize cache performance.

The Zen 2 architecture had some problems. One was the latency in cache performance between cores and CCXs. Zen 3 architecture significantly improves this situation and eliminates cache latency issues.

The AMD Ryzen 5000 Series has seen significant design changes at the SoC architecture level, in addition to the improvements made within the Zen 3. The Zen 2, Matisse, and Zen 3 products were made up of two core complexes (CCXs) per compute device (CCD), each CCX containing 4C8T and 16MB L3 cache. Now, each CCD contains one CCX with up to 8C16T.

The next page will contain detailed press material that explains the Zen 3 architecture. Below is a comparison of Ryzen 7 5800X specs to Ryzen 7 3700X.

The Ryzen 7 5800X eight-core CPU has SMT, so it supports 16 threads. It is, therefore, an 8c/16t CPU design. It’s based on the AMD Zen 3 architecture and is manufactured on TSMC7nm. It contains 4MB L2 cache and 32MB L3 cache. It has 1 CCD, 1 IOD. It has a base frequency of 3.8GHz, a maximum boost frequency of 4.7GHz, and 105W TDP.

The Ryzen 7 5800X and Ryzen 7 3700X look identical, as they are both based on AMD AM4 socket platforms. They are identical in size and height, except for the lettering. They are pretty different in TDP, so that you may want a larger cooler with the Ryzen7 5800X. This CPU’s 105W TDP is higher than the Ryzen7 3700X’s 65W TDP. The Ryzen7 5800X runs much hotter.

The Precision Boost Overdrive (or PBO) support is another feature on the Ryzen 5000 series CPUs. This can be enabled in BIOS to increase boost clocks up to +200MHz. As the official overclocking method, we will use PBO on the Ryzen 7/5800X as our overclocking results. These results will be displayed on our graphs under the PBO results.

Precision Boost Overdrive is supported and implemented as designed on AMD Ryzen 3000 Series processors. To match VRM capabilities, PPT, TDC, and EDC limits are automatically increased to correspond with the BIOS parameters specific to the motherboard.

Workloads that might otherwise be thwarted by socket power or current can continue to boost until another limiter is in effect. The AutoOC feature allows users to increase boost up to +200MHz.
