Who wrote the Wheel of Time?
You might not be aware, but Robert Jordan, the Wheel of Time author, didn’t write all 15 books in this Wheel of Time series.
Why not?
Robert Jordan died before the series was completed, and it was ended by Brandon Sanderson, a fantasy fan favorite.
Is this a sign that the books of the last three volumes are vastly different from those Robert Jordan would have written in his book?
No.
Brandon Sanderson remained true to Robert Jordan’s original vision.
Although Brandon Sanderson wrote the final three books of the series, Towers of Midnight and A Memory of Light, it is still Robert Jordan’s story.

How Many Books In Wheel Of Time?
This is not something I will be fumbling around with. The Wheel of Time series contains 14 books and one prequel. Each paperback contains an average of 826 pages. You commit to details about food in taverns, characters who have blunt fingers as big as sausages, and clothing. To be clear, I support all of this, but sometimes world building can get in the way.

The full list of titles is *takes deep breaths*: The Eye of the World. The Great Hunt. The Dragon Reborn. The Shadow Rising. The Fires of Heaven. Lord of Chaos. A Crown of Swords. The Path of Daggers. Winter’s Heart. Crossroads of Twilight. Knife of Dreams. Towers of Midnight. A Memory of Light. New Spring is the prequel.
Are you required to read every book to understand the plot? Yes, it’s possible. Jordan provides key information throughout, but sometimes it is obscured by meandering. I wouldn’t recommend skipping any. Crossroads of Twilight is an option if you have to. You can skip those chapters if you feel like reading through the point of view of a particular character is tedious.

If you are new to Wheel of Time like I am, then keep reading the Purist order.
Give me the plot basics
The Wheel of Time, which I have simplified to make it seem simpler, is a story about good and evil. It also includes a lot of archetypes and hero’s journey stages. The Dark One is a powerful force of evil that wants to control the universe, twist minds, and eventually make his world. He is described as the incarnation of paradox and evil, the destroyer of logic and reason, the breaker of balance, and the unmaker or order by a character in the book.
The Dark One and his minions are at the side of our heroes at all times, sometimes even in the realm of dreams. The champion who must confront the Dark One is the Dragon, the leader of Light. The Dragon is a reincarnation of a single soul who has fought the Dark One repeatedly. The Dragon has many allies that are almost equal to those of the Dark One. The Wheel of Time examines who is involved in the battle, reborn as the Dragon, and what roles different lands play. It’s a big place, with complex politics that leads to…
What’s the World Like?
The Wheel of Time is a story about a story that has repeated itself over and over. The series’ opening words are: The Wheel of Time spins, and Ages come to an end, leaving behind memories that have become a legend. Legend becomes myth, and myth fades away when the Age that gave birth to it is born again.
The Prophecies of the Dragon are predictions of the future and reveal who the Dragon’s reincarnation is. Just in case you thought that Game of Thrones’s analysis of prophecies was fun, you will be surprised. The characters reveal these prophecies as they progress. Please don’t skip over them, spoilers!
What would a magical world look like without magic? It’s the One Power, which is drawn from the True Source. It’s used by channelers, who have strengths that are tied to the elements (a.k.a. The Five Powers. They create the flow of elements in a way that is similar to spells. The One Power is the key to Dark One vs. Dragon.
The One Power comprises two halves: the female and male parts are called standard and Saidin. The Saidin is the tainted half of the One Power at the moment. Rarely are male channelers, who often go mad when trying to draw the One Power.
Aes Sedai is a group that includes many female channelers. The hierarchy and tenets behind the Aes Sedai are a topic for another article. For now, consider them a ladies only Jedi Order.

Important note: Wheel of Time’s universe doesn’t have Middle earth like names. It is sometimes called Randland by fans, named after one of the main characters.
Who are the Main Players?
Wheel of Time contains approximately 100,000 characters. If you need to keep track of everyone, the glossaries are at the back of the books. Although it can be difficult to name the main characters, I’m going with Rand author and Egwene al Vere as they are pulled from their small village into a positively bland world compared to their quiet lives.
Nynaeve al’Meara, Matrim (Mat), Cauthon, and Matrim (Mat). Each character has a story that pulls in others and sometimes separates in a single direction. You won’t believe the distance they travel from their first appearance to their last.
