About Ronald Reagan
Ronald Wilson Reagan was born in Tampico (Illinois) on February 6, 1911, to John Edward Reagan and Nellie Wilson Reagan. Reagan went on to become an actor and a U.S. President. Governor and President.
Rold Reagan began his career as an actor. In 1937, he was signed to Warner Brothers. Over the next 30 years, he would appear on over 50 films.
His most prominent roles were in the 1940 biopic Knute Rockne and All American and the 1942 film Kings Row. Reagan also married Jane Wyman in 1940. They divorced in 1948.
From 1947 to 1952, Reagan was president of the Screen Actors Guild. It was there that he met Nancy Davis, who would become his wife in 1952.
In 1952, Reagan hosted the General Electric Theater. This was where his political views changed from liberal to conservative.
He gave a televised speech in 1964 for Barry Goldwater. He won the California governorship by a wide margin two years later and was reelected in 1970.
Reagan tried to run for the Republican presidential nomination in 1968 and 1976. He didn’t win the nod until 1980 when he beat Jimmy Carter.
At 69 years old, he was the most senior president to be elected. On March 30, 1981, a plot to assassinate President Reagan was unsuccessful. However, he survived.
Reagan’s 1981 appointment of Judge Sandra Day O’Connor to the Supreme Court as the first woman judge was significant in history.
Reagan won a vast landslide election, and his days in the White House were spent battling Alzheimer’s disease for nearly a decade. He died on June 5, 2004.
