With an aim to provide affordable housing options to the people, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) was established by the state government in 1976. Since then, the MHADA has been responsible for providing quality residential options across the state and across income groups. Currently, it is providing affordable housing options under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

Role of MHADA

The basic objective of the MHADA is to uplift the people who belong to the lower strata of society and provide them with quality housing. So far, the MHADA has provided affordable housing to nearly 7.5 lakh families across the state, of which one-third are in Mumbai alone. The MHADA has jurisdiction over the entire Maharashtra state, except the Vidharba region. For better management and organisation in Mummai, it was divided into three separate boards: the Mumbai Housing and Area Development Board, the Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board and the Mumbai Slum Improvement Board. There are regional boards of the MHADA for the following cities and their jurisdiction area:

Pune Housing and Area Development Board: Pune, Kolhapur, Solapur, Satara and Sangli.

Aurangabad Housing and Area Development Board: Aurangabad, Jalna, Parbhani, Hingoli, Nanded, Latur, Beed and Osmanabad districts.

Nashik Housing and Area Development Board: Nashik, Ahmednagar, Dhule, Nandurbar and Jalgaon.

Nagpur Housing and Area Development Board: Nagpur city.

Amravati Housing and Area Development Board: Amravati, Akola, Yavatmal, Buldhana and Washim districts.

Konkan Housing and Area Development Board: Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.

MHADA Housing Schemes

Every year, the MHADA announces housing lottery in different cities across the state, to allot new homes at affordable prices to eligible applicants. The housing lottery draw is held by the regional board. In 2020, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the lottery announcement was postponed. MITRA: MHADA mobile app

Mobile users can now access all information through the MHADA app, MITRA. The app provides all citizen services. Common across all regional boards, this app is available for download for Android mobile users on Google Play. Following are the services available on E-MITRA:

Form 1: Tenement and plot transfer of tenancy.

Form 2: Commercial unit transfer of tenancy.

Form 3: No-dues certificate.

Form 4: No-objection certificate for mortgage.

Form 5: Sale permission for tenement and commercial tenement.
