Demonetisation: Urban local bodies in Maharashtra collect over Rs 1,000 crores

[ecis2016.org] The move to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes, has turned into a boon for urban local bodies in Maharashtra, with their collections in these notes crossing Rs 1,000 crores

The collection of taxes and arrears by urban local bodies from citizens, in the form of demonetised currency notes, crossed the Rs 1,000-crore mark, on November 21, 2016. The time for accepting demonetised notes to pay taxes was extended till November 24 last week.

The collection in taxes and arrears, till November 21, stood at Rs 1,026.29 crores, a government statement said. Since the centre announced the demonetisation of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes on November 8, 2016, the Maharashtra government allowed citizens to pay their dues, like water and power bills, property tax and arrears, in the scrapped currency.

Till November 21, among the municipal corporations, Mumbai collected Rs 322.06 crores, Thane Rs 38 crores, Navi Mumbai Rs 42.05 crores, Kalyan-Dombivli Rs 52.04 crores, Mira-Bhayandar Rs 41.34 crores, Pune Rs 119.69 crores, Pimpri-Chinchwad Rs 34.67 crores, Nagpur Rs 19.55 crores, Aurangabad Rs 12.66 crores, Nashik Rs 19.16 crores and Kolhapur Rs 9.02 crores, among others, the statement said. The directorate of municipal administration, which covers municipal councils, collected Rs 136.84 crores, it said.
