Identify vulnerable buildings in Delhi: LG to civic bodies

[ecis2016.org] To prevent vulnerable buildings from collapsing in the event of an earthquake, Delhi’s Lt Governor Anil Baijal, has asked the civic bodies to urgently check vulnerable buildings and implement steps to reinforce them

Delhi Lt Governor Anil Baijal, on May 30, 2017, directed the civic bodies to physically check vulnerable buildings in the city and introduce measures to incentivise their upgradation. Baijal directed authorities to incorporate standards of structural safety in the building bye-laws in the national capital, in view of the potential risk of earthquakes in Delhi, which is a seismic zone-IV region.

The Lt Governor also asked the revenue department and the Delhi Police to explore the possibility of setting up a State Disaster Response Force, besides identification of adequate number of disaster shelters at various locations in Delhi. The directions were issued at a meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), chaired by Baijal.

The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, his deputy Manish Sisodia and senior officers from the departments concerned. Baijal asked the agencies to work in a concerted manner, to achieve optimum coordination and results, besides ensuring that response systems remain on-guard and keep a vigil at all times.
