If things work as planned, Mumbai will have at least two operational metro lines in 2020, connecting the western suburbs of the city. The two corridors, Metro Line-2A (Dahisar-DN Nagar) and Metro Line-7 (Dahisar east-Andheri east), are proposed to be commissioned simultaneously in 2020, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said, in a statement. The MMRDA has not yet received possession of land for a car depot for Metro Line-7 as the land parcel is with the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

The MMRDA has also claimed that Line-2B (DN Nagar-Mandale), Line-4 (Wadala-Kasarvadavali) and Line-6 (Swami Samarth Nagar-Vikhroli), will be operational by 2021. “Once completed, these five lines (2A, 7, 2B, 4 and 6) with an aggregate worth of Rs 44,869 crores, are expected to serve more than 50 lakh commuters at around 98 stations across the city,” the MMRDA said. These lines are expected to make a considerable commuter shift by 35%, thus, easing the gruelling grind on the suburban rail network, it said.

August 28, 2019: The Bombay High Court, on August 27, 2019, questioned the Maharashtra government’s decision, to construct elevated metro rail lines across Mumbai city. The court said it did not understand why the state and the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) could not see that the slabs used to construct the elevated metro lines would ‘give way after 40-50 years due to vibrations’ and carrying out repairs would take years.
“World over, we have not seen elevated metro lines running across a city. They are usually underground or run on the ground. Can you imagine how long it would take, to repair the elevated line slabs and what will happen to the traffic situation in such time?” a bench of chief justice Pradeep Nandrajog and justice Bharati Dangre said. “Unlike flyovers, which you can shut for repairs for some time and provide for an alternative route in the meanwhile, what will you do about an entire metro line?” the court asked.
It directed the state advocate general Ashutosh Kumbhakoni, to ask the authorities concerned to give some thought to the subject. The court was hearing a petition filed by the MMRDA, seeking permission to clear some mangroves along the proposed metro lines between Dahisar and Mankhurd areas and another line near Belapur. The advocate general informed the court that as per the current plan, only one of all the proposed metro lines in the city, would be underground.

July 24, 2019: The Maharashtra cabinet has given the green signal to three new Metro lines in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, all of which would be completed by 2026. A statement from the chief minister’s office (CMO) said the three projects would be constructed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
The 9.2-kilometre Gaimukh-Shivjai Chowk line in Mira Road area will have four elevated stations and will be built at a cost of Rs 4,476 crores and is expected to be completed by March 2022, it said.
The Kalyan to Taloja elevated line will be 20.7 kilometres long and have 17 stations. It will cost Rs 5.865 crores and is scheduled for completion by March 2024.
The Wadala-CST line will be 12.7 kilometres long, of which 8.7 kilometres would be underground, and the rest will be elevated.
Of the ten stations, eight will be underground ones, it said, adding that the project is likely to cost Rs 8.739 crores with a completion deadline of March, 2026.

Feb 28, 2019: Maharashtra finance minister Sudhir Mungantiwar, while presenting the vote-on-account for the first four months of 2019-20 (April to July), on February 27, 2019, said that the Mumbai Metro’s network would be expanded to 276 kms from 11.4 kms at present. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the executing agency for Mumbai Metro, has been given a nod for 276 kms of network, he said. The metro will be extended to satellite towns surrounding Mumbai such as Thane, Mira-Bhayander, Vasai-Virar, Kalyan-Dombivali and Bhiwandi, the finance minister said.

Presenting the vote-on-account in the legislative assembly, he said the government was also committed to complete the metro projects in other cities expeditiously. Metro projects are also underway in Nagpur, Pune and Navi Mumbai and 141.06 kms of metro network will be constructed in these cities, Mungantiwar said. Preliminary survey for a light rail transport system is also being undertaken for Nashik city, he said.

November 22, 2018: Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, on November 21, 2018, said Palghar taluka and some parts of Vasai, Alibaug, Pen, Panvel and Khalapur talukas of Raigad district, will be included in the jurisdiction of the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA). He also approved the setting up of Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd, for the operations and maintenance of the Mumbai Metro rail.

Fadnavis, who is the chairman of the MMRDA, was speaking at the 146th meeting of the Authority, in Mumbai. Apart from the inclusion of new areas as growth centres under the MMRDA and approval of establishment of Metro Operations Corporation Ltd, Fadnavis also approved the DPR (detailed project report) of three new metro lines – 10, 11 and 12.
A statement from the chief minister’s office (CMO) said the Metro 10 – Gaimukh-Shivaji Chowk (Mira Road) route would be 11.2 kms and the project’s cost would be Rs 4,476 crores. There will be four elevated stations. The Wadala-CSMT Mumbai Metro 11 will be 11.4 kms in length and the project would cost Rs 8,739 crores. There will be 10 stations (two elevated and eight underground). The Kalyan-Dombivali-Taloja Metro 12 will be an extension of the Metro 5 line. Its total length will be 20.75 kms and the route will be completely elevated. Its total cost will be Rs 4,132 crores. There will be 17 stations on the route.
The statement said all these DPRs will be recommended for approval from the state government. Fadnavis also gave his in-principle nod to the project implementation unit (PIU), for the Virar-Alibaug multi-modal transport corridor. Its total length will be 97 kms and the project will cost Rs 39,841 crores. The chief minister also approved the MMRDA to work as the development authority for the development of Kalina campus of the Mumbai University.
