Over 93 lakh houses constructed by government, in over three years: President

[ecis2016.org] In an address to both houses of the parliament, president Ram Nath Kovind has said that the government has constructed more than 93 lakh houses over three-and-a-half years, in its bid to achieve ‘Housing for All by 2022’

Over 93 lakh houses have been constructed by the government in the last three-and-a-half years, President Ram Nath Kovind said, on January 29, 2018, outlining the centre’s target to provide houses to every poor and homeless by 2022. In his maiden address to the joint sitting of both houses of parliament, he said the government has a ‘sensitive approach’, towards providing housing with availability of water, electricity and toilet facilities, to all the people.

“Over the last three-and-a-half years, more than 93 lakh houses have been constructed by the government, in rural and urban areas. With a sensitive approach towards providing housing with availability of water-electricity-toilet facility to all, my government is targeting to provide a house to every poor and homeless household by the year 2022,” he said.

The housing and urban affairs ministry is implementing the ‘Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban)’, to provide houses to all poor in urban areas by 2022, while rural development ministry is running the ‘Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin)’ scheme for the rural areas. Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), Kovind said interest subvention of six per cent is being provided to the poor, while new schemes have also been launched, keeping in mind the people under the middle income group.

Kovind said the government has also formulated a new Metro Rail Policy, which laid emphasis on ‘last mile connectivity’. “Presently, metro work is in progress in 11 cities of the country,” the president added.
