[ecis2016.org] We get an expert’s view on the various elements involved in landscaping, the role that it plays in housing demand and the changing face of the landscaping industry in India
Landscape architecture strives to achieve a harmonious balance between developments by humans and nature. Landscape is also an important factor that people consider, while looking for a house. Landscape spaces can include lush green lawns, trees for shade, water features and their spatial configuration. These spaces not only add visual value to the surroundings but also provide various physical and mental benefits. An ideal landscape is an integral part of a community because it enhances the quality of living. The elements of landscape design such as soft-scape, hard-scape and water are important, to create the right balance. These elements are majorly influenced by demographic factors. Hence, an efficient design needs to be worked upon. Moreover, landscapes must focus on the wellbeing of those who will use it and offer facilities to all age groups – children, teenagers, adults, elderly and disabled. For example, while designing a play area for kids, one must also consider a seating area for parents to keep a watch over their children.

The objectives of landscape architecture
Landscape architecture is also about creating a space and an environment that is focused on quality and creates an ecological balance. Most landscape designers would agree that plants play an important role, in the overall visual appeal of a property. The use of plants and greenery, evokes a feeling of refreshment, as well as beautifies and enhances the outdoors. In a residential landscape design process, the selection of plants is defined by the needs and goals of the home owner, as well as the conditions in the surrounding site. Plants are not just beautiful, but also help to moderate the environment around the home and stimulate senses, thus, allowing the residents of a community to live amidst nature.

The aim of any landscape, is to build and enhance outdoor experiences. Consequently, landscape architects are identifying ways to use technology to their benefit, to keep up with prevailing styles, human preferences and needs.
How technology is reshaping real estate landscaping
Today, technology is a major part of our everyday lives and its use in landscape, has benefited the sector. Advancements in design and aesthetics have been made possible, with technological evolutions. Now, more than ever before, landscape designs strive to preserve the ecological balance and beauty of the location. Digital technology gives landscape architects a greater voice at the planning stage. It allows them to be proactive and influential in the design’s plan and processes and to facilitate greater collaborations. As a result, innovative landscapes have been booming, thus, creating ecological benefits for a sustainable living environment. Landscape architecture, hence, is a field that is continuously evolving, with new technologies, new plant varieties and new building materials. At the same time, it has also remained true to its history and tradition.
It is an exciting phase for the landscaping industry, which is trying to create experiences using innovative ways. Although the idea of landscaping may be different for different people, humans are rooted in nature and depend on natural forces. Neglecting this will only result in endless concrete jungles and monotonous atmospheres. Landscape architecture, therefore, must not be considered as an expense but rather as an investment, to create beautiful sustainable cities.
