Trial runs for Mumbai Metro lines 2A and 7 to start October 2022

[ecis2016.org] Trial runs for both these lines are expected to start by October 2022 by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and the last phase of commercial operations are expected to start by December 2022 end.

The second phase of Mumbai Metro lines – Line 2A (Dahisar to DN Nagar) from Link Road and Line 7 (Dahisar East to Andheri East) from the Western Express Highway are both finished with 98% of construction work.  Trial runs for both these lines are expected to start by October 2022 by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and the last phase of commercial operations is expected to start by December 2022 end.

Once operations of both the phases of the Mumbai Metro lines – Line 2A and Line 7 begin, they will carry close to 3 lakh passengers.

The first phase of the Mumbai Metro lines- Line 2A and Line 7 started operations in April 2022 with Mumbai Metro 2A plying between Dahisar to Dhanukarwadi and Mumbai Metro 7 operating from Dahisar to Aarey colony. The Maha Mumbai Metro Operations Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL), responsible for operations and maintenance (O&M) has recorded an average daily ridership of 30,000 per day.

The entire Mumbai Metro Line 2A is an 18 km corridor and will have 17 metro stations Mumbai Metro Line-7 is a 33.5-km-long Mumbai metro route and will have 29 Mumbai Metro stations. Mumbai Metro Lines 2A and 7 will have an interchange at Dahisar. Also, the new Mumbai metro Lines 2A and 7 will connect at DN Nagar metro station to the existing Mumbai Metro Line 1 that runs between Ghatkopar and Versova.

Furthermore, to enhance connectivity, the MMRDA has plans to build a foot overbridge at Goregaon station on Metro Line 7 which will connect to the Goregaon suburban railway station. Tenders for the same will be announced by MMRDA shortly.  

Prime minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stones for both the Mumbai Metro routes in 2015 and they were initially to start the following year and then in October 2020. Owing to the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdown, the project was further delayed.
