In line with prime minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Housing for All by 2022,’ the Karnataka government has identified about 1,000 acres, to build about two lakh dwelling units in Bengaluru for the poor, chief minister BS Yediyurappa said, on August 1, 2019. “It is the prime minister’s wish. In the next three to four years, everyone should have a house. In this regard, we have decided to build 10 to 12-storey buildings in Bengaluru,” he told reporters after a meeting with the Finance Department’s officials.

The chief minister further said that the residential project, to be taken up by the Housing Department, would have amenities including elevators. It would be developed on the lines of projects taken up in Gujarat and a few other states. “After a week, I will inspect two to three spots. This year we have set a target of two lakh houses. To complete this, we have identified 1,000 acres of land,” Yediyurappa noted. According to officials, the scheme was meant for urban poor, who would be provided houses at subsidised rates.
