In a bid to regularise illegal water connections in the city and collect water tax dues from defaulters, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), in June 2021, launched its water tax amnesty scheme. Valid for three months, the PMC water tax amnesty scheme will be valid till September 2021.

Among the defaulters that owe as much as Rs 600 crores in outstanding water bills to the PMC, are government offices, private sector firms, banks, hotels and malls, etc. These defaulters have been urged to make use of the PMC water tax amnesty scheme and pay the outstanding dues, to avoid disconnection of services.

For several years, the PMC has also tried to discourage the use of illegal water connections. However, the number of illegal water connections in the city remains significant. To curb this misuse, the PMC is metering and regularising illegal water connections to slums and homes that have been constructed under the gunthewari scheme. A user has to pay 3% extra tariff as connection charges and submit his address proof, proof of identity like Aadhaar card, electricity bill and contact details, along with the application form, to the nearest water zone office.
