Prime minister Narendra Modi, on March 8, 2019, inaugurated the 9.63-km-long Dilshad Garden-New Bus Adda section, an extension of the Delhi Metro’s Red Line. With this new section entirely elevated, the Delhi Metro forayed into the interiors of Ghaziabad for the first time, touching the industrial areas in twin cities of Ghaziabad and Sahibabad. Passenger services on the Red Line extension from Dilshad Garden to Shaheed Sthal (New Bus Adda) in Ghaziabad commenced from 8 am on March 9, 2019. This section is an extension of the 25.09-km Rithala-Dilshad Garden corridor or Red Line, which has 21 stations. After opening of this section, the entire Red Line now spans 34.72 kms.

After flagging off the section, Modi took a ride in a metro train from Shaheed Sthal (New Bus Adda) in Ghaziabad till Kashmere Gate, a major interchange facility on the DMRC network, from where he deboarded, DMRC officials said. Two of the eight stations on the Dilshad Garden-New Bus Adda section have been renamed in the honour of the country’s fallen heroes. “The Rajendra Nagar Metro station has been rechristened as Major Mohit Sharma Rajendra Nagar station and the end station New Bus Adda has been renamed to Shaheed Sthal (New Bus Adda),” a senior DMRC official said.

February 15, 2019: The 9.63-km-long Dilshad Garden-New Bus Adda section of the Red Line, marking the Delhi Metro’s foray into the interiors of Ghaziabad, is set to be inaugurated ‘very soon’ and preparations are underway for it, authorities said, on February 14, 2019. This elevated section, comprising eight stations, will immensely benefit the people of Ghaziabad and connect the satellite city with the national capital.

“We are awaiting for the exact date for the event from the Uttar Pradesh government but it will be done very soon and preparations are underway, meanwhile,” vice-chairperson of the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA), Kanchan Verma, said.

After opening of this section, the entire Red Line will become 34.72 kms. “Trains will be available at a peak hour frequency of six minutes and 12 seconds on the Dilshad Garden-New Bus Adda section. A total of 35 six-coach trains will be used on the entire Rithala-New Bus Adda Red Line corridor. The total journey from Dilshad Garden to New Bus Adda will take about 16 minutes,” executive director, corporate communications, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), Anuj Dayal said.

“The new corridor will be the first metro link connecting the interiors of Ghaziabad. It will pass through the Sahibabad Industrial Area and will significantly impact the residential areas lying in proximity,” Dayal said. The extension of Delhi Metro’s Red Line will connect residents of Ghaziabad to with various parts of the National Capital Region (NCR). “Currently, commuters have to rely on other modes of transport from Dilshad Garden to reach Sahibabad and further to Ghaziabad. Now, with extension of the metro, connectivity to Mohan Nagar from Dilshad Garden could also improve considerably,” he said.

Asked about the cost incurred in the construction, he said, “About 20 per cent has been borne by the DMRC and the rest by the GDA. All the station buildings have at least two TOM (ticket office machine) counters with one counter located at a lower height for facility of differently-abled commuters.”

Out of the eight stations on this section, six stations (Raj Bagh, Rajendra Nagar, Shyam Park, Mohan Nagar, Arthala, and New Bus Adda) have station buildings on both sides of the main highway and platforms on the central verge along the viaduct, i.e., those platforms are not a part of the station buildings but separate. “In other stations on our network, the station buildings and platforms are built together. In these six stations of the new corridor, the concourse level and station platforms are interconnected through foot over bridges (FOBs),” a senior official said. The Shaheed Nagar Station has only one station building on a side while the other side is connected through lifts and a staircase for commuters to reach from road-level to station building. At all stations (except Hindon River) an FOB at concourse level consists of paid and unpaid sections for the use of metro commuters and the general public, respectively. At Hindon River station, the FOB is common for both metro commuters and general public.

This would be the second metro corridor in Ghaziabad, after the Blue Line, which links Delhi to the neighbouring city in Vaishali. Under Phase III, so far 136.62 kms of network has been opened and 10.97 kms of the span would be left – Noida City Centre-Electronic City (6.6 kms) and Dwarka-Najafgarh (4.2 kms). “The Noida City Centre-Electronic City corridor with six stations is also expected to be opened any time soon,” the official said.

February 7, 2019: The 9.4 km-long Dilshad Garden-New Bus Adda section of the Delhi Metro’s Red Line, has got the approval from the Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), paving the way for its opening, officials said, on February 6, 2019. Sources said the new corridor is likely to be inaugurated soon.

“Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) SK Pathak inspected the Dilshad Garden-New Bus Adda section of metro, on February 5, 2019 and has granted the approval,” a senior official said.

February 4, 2019: The 9.4-km-long Dilshad Garden to New Bus Adda section of Delhi Metro’s Red Line, will be inspected for safety on February 5, 2019, officials said on February 1, 2019. This section will be an extension of the 25.09-km Rithala-Dilshad Garden corridor, or the Red Line, having 21 stations.

“Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety SK Pathak will inspect the Dilshad Garden to New Bus Adda section of metro on February 5,” a senior official said.

“This 9.41-km elevated section comprises eight stations – Shahid Nagar, Raj Bagh, Rajendra Nagar, Shyam Park, Mohan Nagar, Arthala, Hindon River Station and New Bus Adda,” he said.

After the opening of this section, the Delhi Metro network span will become 336.5 kms, with 244 metro stations. The Delhi Metro’s current operational span is 327 kms, with 236 stations.

Januray 24, 2019: The centre, on January 23, 2019, approved the extension of the Delhi Metro corridor from Dilshad Garden to New Bus Adda in Ghaziabad, which will provide a much-needed additional public transport infrastructure to the NCR. The approval was given at a cabinet meeting chaired by prime minister Narendra Modi. In a statement, the government said the total distance of the extended line will be 9.41 kilometres.
