[ecis2016.org] Actress Aishwarya Sakhuja speaks to ecis2016.org News about buying her two-BHK home in Mumbai’s Lokhandwala area, which has vibrant and colourful furniture, amidst a minimalistic décor
For actress Aishwarya Sakhuja, who bought a two-BHK flat in Mumbai’s Lokhandwala area in February 2018, the experience was not a pleasant one. Sakhuja saw at least 60 flats in Andheri west, through different agents. “It took me almost a year to finally buy the property. The agents always showed us flats where the seller quoted a higher rate than the actual price. They think actors have unlimited budget, which is not true. There were two properties that we liked but the papers were not in order and so, we did not go ahead with the deal,” says Sakhuja, who is married to director-producer Rohit Nag.

“Eventually, I met an agent through a friend, who was professional and understood my requirement, choice and budget. I bought my house in Lokhandwala through him, in a building that is eight years old. To buy this property, we had to wait, as the seller had to finish pending paperwork, since I wanted everything in order. I have taken a 25 per cent loan, for the property. The registration process was also a bit tedious. There was a lot of delay and we had to wait for almost two hours,” says the actress, who has appeared in television shows such as Saas Bina Sasural, Treedeviyaan, Sarabhai vs Sarabhai Take 2 and also participated in Khatron ke Khiladi 7 and Naach Baliye 7.

“Considering the traffic woes in Mumbai, I felt that it would be better to reside in a centrally located area like Andheri west. All my friends, who are my biggest support system, live close by. My husband’s office is also in the vicinity. Most of the production houses are close by. So, it is easier for me too. We have malls like Infiniti Mall and cinema houses and many good food outlets in the area,” Sakhuja elaborates.

She is particularly fond of the park in her building, where she enjoys walking and jogging. “Greenery makes a lot of difference – it is relaxing. I have a good view from my house, as the building does not directly face another building. I get ample sunlight and cross-ventilation. The building has good security. Also, my neighbours are friendly and that matters a lot,” Sakhuja explains.
Minimal, yet vibrant home décor

Sakhuja and her husband opted for a modern and minimal look for their home’s interiors, which took three months to complete, with the help of architect Parvez Ansari of ‘Reform Design and Build firm’. The couple opted for an energy cleansing ritual for the house and a puja, before moving in. All the furniture in the house, was custom-made. The living room has an industrial look, with a high ceiling and interesting use of lights. An open kitchen makes the living room appear more spacious. A coffee bar section, with items from the US and Australia, make this space look like a café. The couple picked up opens shelves from Dubai to match the décor. One of the walls is adorned with posters of films, as well as a Mona Lisa embroidery.
“The basic colour is muted and subtle white and grey but the furniture in the living room has vibrant colours. The living room has comfortable turquoise sofas, pink cushions and yellow bar chairs. Hues of various colours and lighting have been interestingly combined, to make it a comfortable, soothing and a beautiful retreat. My favourite area is in the bedroom, where I have my plants near the window. I love to sit on the floor and read, as I am an avid reader. Plants connect me to nature and create a soothing ambiance. I feel happy, overjoyed and most importantly, secure, to own a house in Mumbai. It is a space that gives me comfort and peace,” concludes Sakhuja.
