About AP Housing Board

The merging of the erstwhile City Improvement Board and the erstwhile Town Improvement Trust of Twin Cities, led to the creation of the Andhra Pradesh Housing Board. It was formed on July 1, 1960, under the AP Housing Board Act, 1956. It is a statutory body and its various members include the chairman, the vice-chairman, the housing commissioner and official and non-official members.

Until 1971-72, the Board’s activities were limited to the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Several colonies in the state headquarters, such as SR Nagar, Vengal Rao Nagar, Mehdipatnam, Bagh Lingampally, Barkatpura, Vijay Nagar Colony and Marredpally, which are regarded as modern housing colonies today, were developed by the AP Housing Board. From 1973 onwards, the AP Housing Board began to extend its activities to the district headquarters and several urban areas. The Board catered to the housing needs of the economically weaker section, prior to the formation of the AP State Housing Corporation that is now implementing housing programmes for this category.
