The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has asked for re-designation of the Global City Project as a special zone with as much as 300 percent floor area ratio. This will allow vertical growth and construction of taller buildings that will accommodate more offices, factories and people.
Another change sought is the allowing mixed development in sectors like 36, 37B and 38B. These sectors have been allowed only industrial development in the draft plan.

Land For Metro Depot
The GMDA has also asked for swapping the land area earmarked for metro depot with another land parcel which has been set aside as open space in the current plan. The land for metro depot in the current plan lies between Northern Peripheral Road and National Highway 8. The need for swapping has arisen in light of the fact that the area earmarked for metro depot is meant for open space in the plan currently and the present conditions for open spaces do now allow any depot. Hence the change has been sought which will lead to a more aligned development of the project.
The change proposed now will make it possible for communication and the transport zone to be developed in place of open zone. Consequently, the open zone will now be placed in the land earmarked for the communication and transport zone.

The Global City Project is slated to become an important hub for the Haryana region of Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor and is expected to have wide range of commercial activity, including office spaces and warehousing facilities.
The project has been delayed by more than 15 years. It was supposed to be developed as Special Economic Zone in 2003-2004 and land was acquired for it. But the project was mired in a number of roadblocks which has withheld the development of the project. It is large project to be spread over 1000 acres and is being funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency.
The project is joint venture between the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructural Development Corporation (HSIIDC) and Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (DMICDC). The project will have convention and exhibition center, entertainment zones, industrial belts and many other types of development.
