West Bengal Green City Mission: 4 lakh street lights to be replaced with LEDs

[ecis2016.org] As part of its ‘Green City Mission’, the West Bengal government has said that EESL will replace nearly four lakh street lights in the state with LEDs

Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), on August 22, 2019, said it would replace nearly four lakh street lights in West Bengal with LEDs. State urban development and municipal affairs minister Firhad Hakim, dedicated 56,000 LED street lights, as part of the Green City Mission of the state. “Out of approximately 7.5 lakh street lights in West Bengal, 3.5 lakhs have been converted to LEDs. The state government has roped in EESL, to convert the remaining street lights to LEDs,” the company said in a statement.

EESL, a joint venture of PSUs under the Union Ministry of Power, will make the entire upfront capital investment for the project. The state government will initially pay only 50% of the actual cost and the rest will be paid in the next seven years, on an annuity basis, the company added.

The West Bengal government has revealed that it has spent Rs 1,372 crores towards the green city project, based on the plans submitted by various municipalities to the Urban Development Department

July 26, 2018: The Urban Development Department of West Bengal government, has spent Rs 1,372 crores towards the green city project, undertaken by various urban local bodies of the state, the assembly was informed, on July 25, 2018. Replying during the question hour, urban development and municipal affairs minister Firhad Hakim said the state government was making budgetary provisions for this and the centre was not extending any support.

He said all the municipalities had submitted their green city plans to the department and accordingly, funds were given. Mayor of Siliguri Municipal Corporation and CPI(M) MLA Ashok Bhattacharya, said no funds were given to the urban local body of the north Bengal town and urged Hakim to release them, as per its eligibility. In the green city project, Hakim said, all the existing street lamps would be replaced by LED bulbs and battery-run vehicles would be plied.
