Given that Delhi is a hub of education and is close to the job districts of Noida and Gurgaon, there is no dearth of working professionals and college students looking out for co-living properties in Delhi. The living cost in Delhi for couples can be around Rs 25,000 per month, if one opts for housing options in the more affordable localities. This would include the house rent, utility bills, etc. In the expensive areas of Delhi, the overall living cost will be higher, depending on the lifestyle.

Cost of living in Delhi: Commuting and transport

If you are someone who takes public transport, you will be spending anywhere between Rs 20 and Rs 50 on a ticket, one way, per day. A monthly pass will cost up to Rs 2,000. Cabs are available at all times of the day and depending on the distance covered, you will need to spend anywhere between Rs 50 and Rs 800 per local trip.

The Delhi metro provides an affordable mode of transportation for the residents, by which they can plan to lower the cost of living, mainly transport expenses, in New Delhi. In India, the Delhi metro is the largest metro network. The fare ranges between Rs 10 to Rs 50 in the city.

Utilities, such as electricity and water, are subsidised for Delhiites. On an average, energy and other utility costs range between Rs 2,000 and Rs 10,000 per month given the size of the building, purpose of use of the building, number of family members, etc. Internet cost is less than Rs 1,000 per month. All these expenses must be considered when looking at the average cost of living in Delhi.

This is another crucial aspect when calculating the cost of living in Delhi. If you are a family with kids, budget anywhere between Rs 5,000 and Rs 25,000 per month. On the basis of your child’s age, costs will vary. There are many day-care centres, schools and colleges in the city to choose from. Given the quality of education, the fee structure also varies. Part-time maids/helps/day-care operators to look after your child, will cost you anywhere between Rs 3,000 and Rs 25,000 per month.

On an average, a dine-out at an inexpensive eatery will cost you Rs 300 per person, while a mid-range restaurant will cost Rs 1,500 for two people, per visit. Therefore, depending on the kind of cuisines you love and where you frequent, you can estimate your spending. Other avenues that end up costing you are movies, theatre, hangouts with friends and family, weekend parties, shopping at malls and cost incurred in exploring the city.
