Kumar Mangalam Birla paid a staggering Rs 425 crores for purchasing this bungalow in the heart of south Mumbai, after an auction that lasted for a whole day. He beat five other bidders for this exclusive property including Ajay Piramal of Piramal Realty. He also paid 10% of the money as the initial token amount for his purchase. Jatia House is one of the most coveted residential addresses in south Mumbai. The Jatias purchased the home back in 1972 from Meher Cawasji Vakeel. Kumar Mangalam Birla also owns another sprawling bungalow covering half an acre in the posh locality of Carmichael Road. He has also retained the two-storeyed apartment where he grew up in II Palazzo, the famous building in Malabar Hill. The Jatias were the family behind Pudumjee Paper Mills and MP Jatia, the founder of the company, shifted from Burma to Mumbai in 1964 owing to political unrest.

MP Jatia had lived in his own bungalow in Burma and wanted to replicate the same experience in Mumbai, as well. The Jatia House was occupied by MP Jatia’s sons Shyam and Arun, along with their families, until Kumar Mangalam Birla’s purchase. The bungalow was completely renovated sometime in 1987. The Jatia House has a simple brown and beige colour scheme. The huge space makes it something of a trophy acquisition for Kumar Mangalam Birla.

The bungalow offers unhindered sea views, something which is greatly prized in Mumbai. There are close to 20 bedrooms within the bungalow, along with multiple ballrooms. There is generous wall cladding in tandem with ceilings that are created entirely from Burma teakwood.

The Jatias reportedly entertained a whopping 500-700 people at their famous parties here in this bungalow, in the past. The interiors are characterised by massive corridors, large and airy bedrooms and auditoriums, which are all decked in the finest marble. The bungalow has a lavish garden, complete with a beautiful pond and central courtyard. Property rates in Malabar Hill stand at roughly Rs 1.7 lakhs per sq ft, although bungalow valuations will cover the multiple open spaces and the huge parking areas, as well. Jatia House stands on a plot that is roughly 31,495 sq ft or 2,926 sq metres in size.
