The palace is located near Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei. It is the official residence of the 29th Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah. Aside from being the largest palace in the world, Istana Nurul Iman also has a lot of political significance – the recently concluded 28th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting was held virtually from Istana Nurul Iman.

Istana Nurul Iman is spread over 2,00,000 sq metres of area, and boasts 1,788 rooms. The marvellous mansion has 257 bathrooms, a banquet hall that has the capacity to entertain 5,000 guests, parking space for 110 cars, air-conditioned stable for 200 polo ponies, five swimming pools, a helipad and a magnificent masque. The mosque of the palace can accommodate up to 1,500 people. It also flaunts 44 staircases made of 38 kinds of marble.

Built in 1984, Istana Nurul Iman was reportedly constructed at an estimated cost of 1.4 billion. The construction of the palace took two years. The current estimated worth of the palace is pegged at more than Rs 2,550 crores.

Even though Istana Nurul Iman holds the title to being the world’s biggest home, it is not the world’s most expensive home – that distinction is held by Buckingham Palace with its estimated worth of $2.9 billion.

Designed by Leonardo Locsin, the mansion is also known as The Light of Faith Palace. The palace’s grand white exterior, golden domes (the dome of the palace is studded with 22 carat gold) and vaulted roofs merge Brunei’s Islamic culture and Malay traditions beautifully. The interior of the palace was designed by Khuan Chew, who also worked on the construction of Burj Al Arab in Dubai. Gold and marble are the prime materials used to decorate the world’s biggest palace.
