House NA, Japan: Construction and philosophy

The Transparent House in Japan has individual floor plates, creating the right ambience for diverse activities. The house does provide space for privacy, should people choose to be left alone, while also accommodating a larger group of people by distributing them throughout the entire structure. According to Sou Fujimoto, the most fascinating part of any tree is that these places are not ‘hermetically isolated but remain connected to one another in its unique relativity’. Hence, ‘to hear one’s voice from across and above, hopping over to another branch, a discussion taking place across branches by members from separate branches are some of the moments of richness encountered through such spatially dense living’, states the architect.

Sizes range between 21 and 81 sq ft for every floor plate, which is connected to others by several ladders and stairs. These include movable steps and shorter fixed steps, as well. Stratification of floor plates enables this dwelling to serve various functions, including creating scope for functional and innovative workspaces and providing multiple seating arrangements. The house has a thin steel frame in white and white-tinted birch flooring.

Uniquely-positioned fenestration enhances ventilation while ensuring that this is the sole source of cooling and ventilation in the summer months. Nevertheless, a few floor plates have in-floor heating for comfortable and cosy winters. The plumbing equipment and HVAC equipment, along with lateral bracing and storage, remain located in the north-facing thick wall at the rear of the dwelling. Extra lateral bracing is ensured through the bookshelf (full height), along with concrete panels which are lightweight and fully integrated within the elevations on the sides. Curtains have also been installed, for enabling temporary partitions, which take care of separation and privacy-linked concerns.

While Sou Fujimoto admits that the white-steel frame based structure has no actual resemblance to any tree in reality, he, however, highlights that the ‘life lived and the moments experienced in this space, is a contemporary adaptation of the richness once experienced by the ancient predecessors from the time when they inhabited trees’. Such an existence spans architecture, city, body and furniture and is a balance between artificiality and nature.
