Pune Bangalore Expressway

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has proposed the construction of the Pune Bangalore Expressway under the Bharatmala Pariyojna.

This greenfield expressway is expected to be a faster alternative to the existing National Highway 48 (the old NH 4) and will reduce the traffic and congestion experienced here. Supporting a speed of 120 km/hr, the new Pune Bangalore Expressway will be a six-lane access controlled expressway. The distance between Pune and Bangalore will be reduced by 95 kms. It will reduce the travel time between Pune and Bangalore to 7 to 8 hours as compared to the existing 11 to 12 hours.

Pune Bangalore Expressway: Cost of the project

The 745-km-long Pune Bangalore Expressway will be constructed at an expense of around Rs 31,000 crore.

Pune Bangalore Expressway: Route

The six-lane asphalted greenfield Pune Bangalore Expressway will start from Varee Budruk. In Maharashtra, the Pune Bangalore Expressway will pass through drought-prone areas of Satara and Sangli districts – Khandala, Phaltan and Khatao in Satara district and Khanapur, Tasgaon and Kavathe Mahankal localities in Sangli district.

In Karnataka, the Pune Bangalore Expressway will pass through Belagavi, Bagalkot, Gadag, Koppal, Ballari, Davangere, Chitradurga, Tumkur and then connect to Bangalore.

Pune Bangalore Expressway: Project plan

Many sections of the existing 849-km highway get submerged during the monsoons, thereby, affecting travel. The new Pune Bangalore Expressway will be designed in such a way that no section is flooded at any time.

The Pune Bangalore Expressway will have two airstrips of 5 kms each for emergency landing purposes for aircrafts. The Pune Bangalore Expressway will include amenities like restrooms, hotels and play areas for children and trees will be planted alongside the Greenfield highway.  The Pune Bangalore Expressway will have vehicles plying at a maximum speed of 120 km per hour. As it is planned to be 100 metres in width, the Pune Bangalore Expressway will be bigger than the Mumbai Pune Expressway.

Pune Bangalore Expressway: Status

Presently in the proposal stage, work has not yet commenced on the Pune Bengaluru expressway project. Once a detailed project report (DPR) is made, the land acquisition for this Greenfield project will start.
