The earliest references of yard comes from the British who used the term, yard, as a unit of measurement. It was used, not just to measure land but cloth, as well. More recently, the Americans and the British use it. The latter use yard to talk about shorter distances while longer distances are referred to in terms of miles.

The yard or international yard, as in the United States is 0.9144 metre (meter). This was established through an agreement between Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States in 1959 and was validated under the Weights and Measures Act of 1963. The Imperial Standard Yard of 1855 was given the name the United Kingdom Primary Standard Yard and retained its status as the national prototype yard.
