The kitchen is the heart of a home and we have two kitchens – one is a regular kitchen and the other is an open kitchen with a dining area, adjoining the living room, where my wife Alyona and I host friends for casual get-togethers or festivals, birthdays and celebrations. Our kitchen is a traditional Indian kitchen, with a contemporary set up. We kept utility in mind, while designing the kitchen. Alyona and I had a discussion with our designer, to build a kitchen that is comfortable and convenient for us.

Cooking lunch on Sundays, together as a family, is a joyous activity and one of the big reasons for this, is that our kitchen is spacious. There are three main areas that we considered, when designing the kitchen – the storage, cooking and washing zones. Things that are regularly used are kept within close reach and others items are placed at the back ends of cabinets. A well-lit kitchen is a safe one. So, we have ensured that the space is well-lit. Our kitchen is subtle, with cool colours. It is spacious and very airy.
As cooking is my passion and profession, over the years I have amassed a lot of kitchen collectibles, which are all dear to me. Whether it is a chef’s knives or kitchen gadgets, I love picking up things for my kitchen, especially when I travel. Back home, everybody in the family starts their day with a glass of fresh juice. Cooking can be therapeutic, depending upon the space. A clutter-free and clean kitchen is a sure-shot way, to ensure a hassle-free and enjoyable cooking experience.

Kitchens have become trendy, sophisticated and visually appealing. Modern kitchens require smart planning, to ensure that it blends with the home décor. As kitchens have evolved into social spaces, technology is more embedded in it, with a vast range of smart gadgets that easily integrate into the décor. My wife Vinny Arora and I have an elegant, minimal style kitchen that suits our needs. The kitchen has convenient storage options, with aesthetically-designed shelves and pull-out drawers. It is done up with a mix of Italian marble and laminates. Well-placed LED lights, along with natural light and ventilation from the huge window, make it bright.

These days life has become very demanding and one needs to unwind. I find cooking to be the best way to relax, on a holiday. It also helps me to bond better with my wife. I experiment, by making salads, sandwiches and pizzas.
We like our kitchen to be clutter-free and hence, we have not filled it with too many appliances. The theme is simple, with solid colours, a modular kitchen and extensive use of frosted glass, along with a refrigerator, microwave and grill. The refrigerator is predominantly filled with healthy food items – fruits, vegetables and some chocolates – but once in a while we do stock cold drinks. We have several refrigerator magnets, which capture our best travel moments. My wife likes to write quotes like ‘Happiness is homemade’ on a board kept in the kitchen. The quotes keep changing, depending on the mood and occasion and are intended to make us laugh, be more positive or inspire us.

When we designed our home, my wife Addite and I decided to have an open kitchen, so that it would be a part of the living room. In fact, our entire house largely has an open plan, except for the bedroom which is a private space. The kitchen has been done up in dark brown and beige colours. It has handmade tiles and wooden cabinets. The kitchen is neat and well-equipped with all modern gadgets, including a coffee maker. We have used white lights, as well as yellow spotlights, which add to the ambiance. It is a functional kitchen that is clutter-free.
When we travel, we like to buy interesting knick-knacks for the kitchen, to add to the décor. We picked up a wooden spoon and fork from a recent trip to Italy, which we have displayed on the wall. We also have quirky food-related posters, huge bottle cork-shaped coasters and bulbs which resemble salt and pepper stands, in addition to a painted kettle, fancy pickle jars and miniature figurines, all of which make a unique style statement. Our refrigerator is stocked with healthy options, including plenty of fruits and multi-grain flour. We are very particular about cleanliness and our maid does a good job of keeping the kitchen clean. My wife is a great cook and enjoys cooking. Once in a while, we make fried pomfret, together. I make smoothies of different flavours – my favourite is cacao and almond milkshake.
