Hyderabad airport may get its own underground rail link

[ecis2016.org] In an effort to improve connectivity to Hyderabad’s international airport, the Railways has said that it will undertake a feasibility study for providing train connectivity to the airport, through an underground network

The Railways will explore the possibility of providing train connectivity to Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad from Umdanagar, through an underground network. Announcing this, railway minister Suresh Prabhu said that the feasibility study for the project, will be assigned to Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES).

RITES has been asked to submit a report on the extension of the Multi Modal Transport System (MMTS or suburban network) connectivity, to Shamshabad Airport from Umdanagar (on city’s outskirts) through underground connectivity, Prabhu said.

“Telangana is the youngest state of the country and there is a need to provide it with more help. As announced in this year’s rail budget, the Railways will set up two new world-class greenfield terminals at Cherlapalli and Nagulapalli in a time-bound manner, with cooperation from the state government,” Prabhu said.

Earlier, union minister of state for labour and employment, Bandaru Dattatreya, appreciated Prabhu’s efforts to develop rail infrastructure in Telangana. The Lok Sabha MP from Secunderabad also requested Prabhu to provide rail connectivity to the Shamshabad Airport.
