The landscape
The Virwanis bought the two-and-a-half acre plot almost 20 years ago and the farmhouse that stands on it, was constructed in two phases. The duplex house has been designed by Tanuj’s parents, actress Rati Agnihotri and businessman Anil Virwani.
“Its proximity to Mumbai, makes it easily accessible for a quick weekend getaway. Abundantly blessed with natural beauty, our weekend home is the perfect place to relax with family and friends,” says Tanuj Virwani, who has acted in films like Purani Jeans, Luv U Soniyo and One Night Stand.

The Virwanis have been regularly frequenting the farmhouse for the past 10 years. “My dad has a business in Pune and earlier, my nani (maternal grandmother) lived in Pune. So, Lonavala was the midpoint for us. Also, when I shoot in the Pune stadium, I prefer to stay in my farmhouse. During the lockdown, I feel blessed to have a house, where I can enjoy the outdoors, go jogging and trekking. Right now, my father, my pet and the staff and with me here, at the farmhouse. My mother is stuck in Poland due to the lockdown,” says Virwani who also played the character of Vayu Raghavan in the web series Inside Edge.

Earthy tones

The five-BHK farmhouse has a classy décor and fulfils the needs of the occupants. The design palette is of soft, earthy and neutral hues. The art-deco style of the house comfortably links the past to the present. The sprawling living room is simple and yet, classy.
The walls and the high ceilings are in white and beige colours, complementing the subtle tone of the furnishings. The room has refurbished wooden sofas.
The huge windows have been designed to maximise the entry of light streaming into the home at day time and to enjoy the twinkling sky at night.
“My favourite place here is by the window, where I enjoy the greenery in the morning with the rising sun. It feels like a sanctuary to me,” states Virwani.
Near the staircase in the living room is also the bar area. The bar table is made of glass and carved wood. The custom-made bar stools have seats made of horse saddles.
The entertainment room has a home theatre and lounge chairs and it also doubles up as a home gym with a cycle, weights and bench-press. The entertainment room has a variety of board games. A metal staircase, instead of a concrete one, maintains the light and open feel in the house.

A traditional wooden swing and rocking chairs, add a relaxing zone near the study. The bedrooms are all comfortable and done up in ethic style of décor. The only exception is Tanuj Virwani’s bedroom, which is more contemporary.
The home has various artworks, which the family has picked up over the years from various places. Paintings of Lord Ganesha and Buddha brighten up the walls. There are many fragrant candles all over the house, made by Agnihotri.
Near the main gate of the house is a huge fountain and plenty of open space. The family grows vegetables such as carrots, cabbage, lemon, beetroot and cauliflower on the property.

A blissful atmosphere
Almost a hundred feet away from the farmhouse in the garden area, is a glass house which the family uses for meditation. Virwani, who has recently taken up the hobby of making wooden animals, spends time here.
The overall composition of the home is simple, earthy and charming and it exudes a country atmosphere. “It is an ideal place to recharge one’s batteries, ponder, muse and reflect. The greenery and openness give a positive, feel-good emotion. My farmhouse gives me a feeling of bliss and calmness,” he concludes.
